Vivian is sick and tired of feeling like crap. She wonders why she can’t trust her body. She’s afraid to leave the house, because she’s not sure when the next ‘attack’ will happen. She feels embarrassed and betrayed.
But recently she’s realized that she abandoned her body connection years ago. As a young girl, a family ‘friend’ began to sexually abuse her. At the time, and for many years later, she felt there was no one she could go to — or trust.
For Vivian, the abuse seemed tolerable because that connection to her body was gone. She wants to reconnect. She is ready to begin a new relationship. Which for her will mean not pushing through pain and ignoring what her body is telling her, not allowing herself to engage in eating things that she knows will have negative effects.
What If You Could Really LOVE Your Body?
Over the course of the next few weeks we will continue to outline how you can achieve, maintain or improve your health by using the ancient wisdom of the Native American medicine wheel. If you missed Part 1 click here to start your journey. So how do you connect abundant health to the medicine wheel?
The basic Native American medicine wheel is usually drawn as a circle with four equal quadrants that look like a times or plus symbol in the center. Then specific colors fill each space, depending upon the lesson or significance designed by the tribe or nation. For more information on how the Native American medicine wheel works click here.
Become Consciously Aware That You Have Choice in Your Life (East)
Be mindful of your environment: everything you think, say and do are all part of your ability to change your health.
The Three Arrows of Power
- The thoughts you think;
- The words you speak; and
- The actions you take.
What Actions Can You Take to Produce a Healthy Environment?
The use of non-toxic cleaners, fresh (rather than processed) foods, or drinking filtered water – can make a HUGE difference in your life. It is said that the journey of a thousand miles, one must begin with the first step.
Balance and the Law of Nature (South)
It is important to observe the laws of Nature because of your energetic connection. If plants, air or water should disappear, so will humanity. The Law of Nature is the same as the Law of Physics — nurture the Earth and she will last; pollute her … and she will die.
When you think about it, ALL things are connected. Within every human body are all the same elements that exist within our sacred Earth Mother. You have salt water outside your cells; fresh water within your cells. Within your life you experience the same cycle of seasons. And you have the same minerals in your body as within the Earth.
In planting crops, you can either deplete the soil or work harmoniously with it by rotating the crops or growing plants that strengthen each other.
Life for Life
So focus on eating ‘life for life.’ Make it a point to eat live foods, predominantly green foods every single day. Strive for at least 75% of the nutrition you have to be in that category.
Your Relationship with Water and Emotional Currents (West)
Water is the element of the west and has the power to wear or break stone. It carries you to distant shores. Water teaches the importance of change, and when used regularly can save your life.
Have you ever noticed how some people seem to maintain a youthful appearance, while others seem to age prematurely? Well, that smooth youthful appearance comes from rediscovering a simple habit … drink plenty of water every day because water is necessary for joints, breathing, waste elimination, circulation, and healthy skin.
Your Relationship with Wind and Breath (North)
Air on the medicine wheel is in the north and, although it isn’t often seen with the naked eye, has great power. It can uproot a tree or cool your brow.
It shifts and changes at will and in the right moment — merged with the scent of pine or food — guides you with anticipation to a new experience.
Through your breathing and movement you bring oxygen into your entire body and energize your bloodstream. When your blood has plenty of oxygen in it, when your tissues have a lot of oxygen, it sustains a healthy internal environment.
How does this connect to the Native American Medicine Wheel?
It begins in the east with your conscious awareness, where the new day dawns. When you awaken your spirit and are consciously aware that you have CHOICE in your life, then things begin to change. So the thoughts that you think can either empower or disempower you.
As you move to the south on the medicine wheel, this is the element of the Earth and it has to do with nutrition and food. You can see how important it is to make conscious choices about how you feed your body.
Moving on to the west, the element of water … this is the place of navigating through the emotional currents of your life as well as hydrating your body properly. Your body is comprised of a high percentage of water and you need to maintain a healthy level of hydration.
Finally, as you move to the north, this is the element of wind or air. It has to do with the thoughts you think, as well as oxygenating your system with proper breathing and exercise and movement.
