Sharon had always liked to do things her way.
She loved to think of herself as a maverick and lone ranger. She made spontaneous, random decisions and expected her team to handle her erratic moods without question.
Needless to say, this wasn’t working so well…
It was the antithesis of working with purpose.
Sharon was oblivious about how she was affecting everyone around her. She could see the frustration level dramatically increasing, but had no idea where it was coming from – and no one dared tell her for fear of losing their job.
Many of her team members were at the end of their rope. There was no consistency, and it was never quite clear what Sharon wanted. She changed her mind all the time. So it was virtually impossible for them to please her and succeed in their jobs.
Gradually, more and more chaos started to appear in every part of her business. It was like a pressure cooker, with everyone in it slowly boiling alive! This was definitely NOT fun!
What does F*U*N* have to do with working with purpose?
At first, Sharon thought it was “them” and blamed everyone in her company. She had no idea that she was at the helm of causing all this chaos!
It was only when people started to leave that she got the whack on the side of her head that she needed. People who had been with her a long time suddenly left without giving a reason and barely giving notice.
What a wake up call!
Sharon knew that something had to change. Something HUGE before she lost everyone!
Left home alone inside her head, Sharon couldn’t figure out what was making people so unhappy. So she took courageous action.
One by one, she interviewed her team members. She gave them full permission to be completely honest and asked them a series of questions to get to the bottom of the mystery.
What she learned was truly enlightening. It was her inconsistency and management style that were the main cause of all the problems!
She saw that she needed to make some big changes
Here’s how working with purpose creates fun:
- Everyone knows what the goal is and how they will all achieve it together.
- It creates understanding.
- It creates consistency.
- Everyone knows their role—who they report to, what they’re doing, and when.
- Upset and frustration are a thing of the past.
- Everyone gets to play in the sandpit together!
Sharon began to be more purposeful and consistent. She learned to trust her team more and empower them to take leadership roles. Amazingly enough, everyone suddenly started to enjoy their jobs a whole lot more!
She realized it was a whole lot easier not having to control everything – and a whole lot more FUN!
