The Medicine Wheel teaches us everything we need to know about life. It shows us each stage, or direction, of our life and how to move through each of the transitions in balance and harmony.
It’s been a year since Dad made his completion and went ‘back home,’ so (as is customary in our family) we had the ‘wiping of the tears’ ceremony this weekend. And what a weekend it’s been!
After thirteen moons of observance, I put my traditional regalia back on and danced at Pow Wow in the Garden of the Gods. Our sacred Mother Earth felt soft beneath my feet, and I was grateful to be lovingly cradled by her and in the circle again — dancing with joy!
Seeing old friends and meeting new ones is one of the best things about Pow Wow. It warms my heart to see the Elders. This year Eugene Red Hawk (Mohawk) looked SOOO good! He said that realizing he had a wheat sensitivity has really made a huge difference in his health…and you could SEE it!
Austin Bent Box (Southern Ute) gave the opening invocation in his Native Ute language. It is so moving to hear someone speak their Native language. The culture of a people lives within their language, and it is so important to honor that and to keep it alive.
Austin is an inspiration to so many. He was inducted into the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame, and we’re going to be taking Tai Chi lessons from him starting next Saturday. Won’t that be amazing!
As Austin walked around visiting the vendors, he found a print of a painting that had been done of him in 1992. He showed it to us and said, “You’re not going to believe this!”
When he saw the picture, he picked it up and asked the vendor, “Do you know who this is?” She said she didn’t and he smiled and said, “It’s ME!” He asked how much she wanted for it, and she handed it to him and said, “Take it.”
Our Native people are generous by nature…
Changing of the Seasons
As our ancestors have done before us, we continue to practice the Indian wisdom as we have been taught to honor the changing of the seasons — and to synchronize ourselves with the natural order set in motion by the Great Mystery.
As each season changes, it is valuable to take some time to observe and reflect on all the blessings you’ve received and all the gifts the previous season has brought forth. And remember to focus your intent on that which awaits you…good works still to be done, so you can consciously call in the support you desire.
It is time to welcome the Season of Gratitude and Harvest! This is represented in the West on the Medicine Wheel. During this special time, there is an increased balance between the masculine and feminine energies. Awareness of this as you take action will allow things to flow more easily for you…
