Do You Still Use Bent Nails?

Why do I ask if you still use Bent Nails?

bent nails

When I built my first barn, starting at age 15, we used bent nails. My brothers, sister and I would have to straighten the nails to use them. Most of the time 2 or 3 times until we could finally drive them into the boards so that they would hold together. It was very time consuming as well as added months to the job of just building the first floor of the barn.

The wood we used was also salvaged from old railroad car decking and siding. Those boards where hard as a steel, almost. Lots of times we had to pre-drill the nail holes to get the nails into the boards. Recycling is great, with a good blacksmith shop, you can recast nails.

Our Fathers plan was to complete the barn before winter. However, by the time we stripped the lumber from the railroad cars, straightened nails, dug and poured the foundation, Months had passed. Just building the first floor walls was a chore with such hard wood.

Uncle to the rescue

Our uncle came over to help us, and watching the challenges we were having, offered to help us finish the barn and trade the cleaned railroad car lumber for new dimensional lumber and some new nails. I now know how valuable the solid oak boards were worth, however we were able to complete the barn before winter set in. The value added was getting the project completed on time. The horses were happy, and so were all of us kids.

I did learn how to drive nails and do basic framing and siding during this project, however, I bent my fair share of “New Nails” also. My Father use to call them gymnast nails, as they bent easy when we would “Missed it by that much” moments happened.

Sustainable and Self Sufficient

Being Sustainable means being able to sustain your life and lifestyle in an abundant way. My paraphrase and understanding. We all have the same amount of time everyday to accomplish projects and be productive.

Becoming Self Sufficient is what I use to think was the definition for sustainable. To be able to do everything yourself, relying upon no one else or others. I quickly learned that relying upon others was very important when I spent a few years in the US Navy on board a submarine. We all had to understand how the ship and its systems worked as well how to operate and manage them in an emergency. The entire ship was Sustainable as long as we all worked together during the patrols.

But we were never self-sufficient even as a crew. We had support from the rest of the fleet to keep us operational and out to sea to complete our mission.

Lessons learned

I am sharing this with you today, because of a comment that someone shared with me. They shared how the could save money by purchasing cheaper products to complete their project.

This is what I have learned:

  • Cheaper products do not always save you money, they can cost you everything if they fail.
  • Buying used can be good IF you purchase quality. (ever buy and expensive cheap car?)
  • Outsourcing some projects can save you months or years over the lifetime of your farm or business
  • Preparing a project plan and being adaptable is better than having no plan
  • Test new ideas, study the outcome of what you want, to see if you will have customers who will purchase what you produce.
  • Sometimes, plans have to be completely changed for the better as you learn more
  • Everything is an experiment when you are creating something that has never been done before
  • Just because it has always been done this way does not mean there can not be a better solution. Be open to changes
  • Do not become emotionally attached to the process, listen to others who come to help, good advice comes from unexpected sources sometimes
  • Measure at least twice and cut once
  • Keep your cutting tools sharp and prepared
  • Lay out a plan for the land or business you are building to optimize all of your activities
  • Invest in your Mind, Learn new skills and Teach others what you have learned.

There has been much more I have learned over the years. Be respectful to others who want to try something new. I know that I will still have challenges and “Do overs”, but I have become more adaptable to the circumstances.

Trapped in Your Own Business?

The dream of owning your own business brings to mind time and financial freedom. Built properly, your business fulfills that dream. But your business could also become a nightmare of being “owned” by a self-purchased job.

I know the nightmare. I have created a Just Over Broke (JOB) when I purchased an existing business before. The results were not healthy for me or pretty for my finances. Working too many hours, getting into debt and living a stress filled life.
I will be sharing some of the major mistakes that myself and others have made and how to avoid them.

field-175959_640

Building a business can be stressful. With planning and knowing that what you are about to build is your passion. You dream about farming, gardening and creating the life you want. You wake up in the middle of the night with Great Solutions for the business you want to build.
Reading, researching and talking to everyone who will listen about your business goals. Meeting others who desire to, or are living the lifestyle you are working towards. As an avid “Organic Food aficionado” you reject the chemicals, poisons and shortcuts that can damage the land and your families health. Knowing that you will continue to work toward the sustainable life until you have reached your goal.

You have the “grit” to continue your plan until your dream is fulfilled. Are you passionate about living the homesteading, farming or sustainable estate lifestyle? Let me share about the mistakes and solutions that I discovered on my journey so far.

The Dream to Build a Business

Over the years, I discovered I wanted to build a business rather than work a job or buy one for myself. Don’t get me wrong, I have had some amazing jobs. I learned many skills and talents from them. However, there is no Real time freedom in a job.
I have started businesses that turned out that I just “Owned a Job” to take care of that business. Overtime, I searched many “Opportunities” that I thought could be the Perfect business to give me time freedom. But I had a huge challenge ahead of me. That challenge was discovering for myself, how to separate Business or work from family life.

When I had a job, they could easily be separated. I had time that I worked and time that I spent with my Life! But a business, how does that work? They seem to be intertwined to such a point, that life, the business and work was one big blur, Yikes!!! No time for myself.

My First Large Business

Growing up, I started lawn mowing businesses, irrigation pipe changing, bucking bales in fields, cleaning up construction sites and then cleaning stalls, feeding horses, buying-training and selling horses. I learned many of my skills from the people I worked for.

As farmers, we knew many people who had their own businesses, and I thought that would be the best way to do well in life. So when I got out of the military, I had the opportunity to purchase a business with my family. A Grocery Store mini-complex was for sale 10 mile from the Canadian border in Washington state. It needed a lot of work, but it was a small town and we would be the closest business near the border. Being a hard worker, we tend to look at work as an opportunity.

automobile-392751_640

Hunters, fishermen, travelers and local residents would “Flock” to our business! The dream was alive and well! We were on our way to business success!

The reality of “owning a Job”

Once we purchased the business, the reality of the workload hit hard and fast. Yes, we had customers from day one, well wishers and those who wanted to know if we would give credit like the old owner did. We said “no” to almost everyone, except for special circumstances.
Here is a list of the major challenges we had with this business:

  • Clean and organize the store
  • Clean up and remodel the “coffee shop” into a restaurant
  • Provide firewood for the building for winter
  • Set up and purchase products that sell for a fair profit
  • Maintaining the building, gas pumps, restaurant equipment and trailer park that came with the store.
  • Communicate with family members and do our best to stay on purpose for doing all of the:
    • Work
    • Taxes
    • Banking
    • Ordering of products
    • Cleaning
    • Marketing
    • Customer service
    • Special orders
    • Picking up supplies not delivered
    • Etc………

As a hard worker, those tasks were not that daunting. However, as a business owner there were concerns.

  • We had gone into debt to purchase the property and buildings. The local, state and federal taxes had just been increased which was not in our original calculations.
  • The income for the first month was a bit more than what we expected, but so were the cost of repair parts.
  • The hours of work had increased to an unsustainable 17 hour day. This included the “day of rest” that we had planned for.
  • Health became an issue working this many hours, so we did finally allow quite a bit of smaller items to “Just be” as they are. We placed those items on a “To Do” list.
  • Mental health also had taken a back seat for the first 6 months, thus health concerns, so once the major projects were completed, we each got one day off per month.

Even though we felt we were on the right track for success, it had become a “Job” where even our time off was filled with business related tasks. With a physical store there are specific hours we needed to be open. Due to the local customers “habits and time schedule”, we would open at 6 am and close at 9 pm. We also served the local sheriff and fire department who would need fuel or help sometimes in the middle of the night.

All in all, the people of the community were supportive, but just like any community, there are also certain customers who were a bit troublesome.

In conclusion as to why this business was a job.

  • Our time was dictated by our customers we served.
  • We did not research the business and expenses properly.
  • Our debt load was too high for the price we paid for the property
  • Our fuel pumps required replacement and continual maintenance
  • Credit for customers
  • Major repairs and renovation was needed to improve the restaurant
  • Our location limited our income potential

Solutions Learned:

  • Research the potential of the business
  • Keep your debt as small as possible
  • Become creative with time, projects and repairs
  • Take time off to enjoy life and family
  • Hire people who are enthusiastic about your passion
  • Do your best each day
  • Keep learning and adding more benefits to your customers and employees
  • Nurture your business to make a profit
  • Build relationships with other successful business owners
  • Hire a mentor

Building a Sustainable Farm Business

Now that we are building a farm in the high mountains of Colorado, we have taken our own advice.
We started out with the following:

  • The land was purchased for cash
  • We spent years researching what is wanted and needed by customer
  • We have met many successful farmers and business owners
  • We have mentors
  • We continue to research our environment and how to optimize our assets
  • We have a budget and pay cash for what we need
  • We trade labor
  • We help support other local businesses while promoting our own also

As we continue to improve our farm, we have added other income items to our business. All of what we do is in line with our passion: Complete healthy, Organic nutritional products. The products we sell we either grow ourselves, or are products that we use ourselves to improve and maintain our own health.

Conclusion:

  • Be debt free if possible while building your business
  • Take time for your health
  • Keep learning and adapting
  • Sell what your customers want
  • Make a good profit
  • Hire help as you can afford it
  • Live the passion and the dream you started with
  • Adapt your business as needed.

Book Marketing Coach: How To Promote Books In Book Magazines

Note from Ronda: One of the hats I wear as an author mentor is book marketing coach. Here is a way for you to expand your reach as an author and sell more books by getting into magazines. This is a guest blog post.

Book Marketing Coach: How To Promote Books In Book Magazines

You have spent sleepless nights working on your book and now it is out, why not promote the book doing what you do best — writing? Below are several examples on how you can promote your book using book magazine.

Book Excerpts

Many popular magazines use book excerpts. They normally want excerpts from books which relate to their magazine, for example, cooking magazines usually want excerpts from cookbooks, poetry magazines want to excerpt poetry books and a travel magazine will quote travel books.

If your book features Native African art in Southern Africa, for example, a South Africa travel or history magazine might be interested in publishing your work on South Africa tribes. An excerpt from a book on writing tips for home-based businesses can provide a good content for a writer’s magazine.

Topic Submission

You should submit articles on topics which are only remotely related to the book you have written to promote it. For example, if you have written a book on creative parenting, you can promote it through articles featuring storytelling techniques for parents, how to teach children money awareness, how parents can uphold family traditions and tips for helping parents bond with their new baby. But you can also plug this book even if you are writing an article about snails. You can mention, for example, that when you ware writing the parent book, you met a father who paid his 6-year old son a dollar to catch garden snails.

How about an article on early culture comparisons for a history or an ethnic magazine; flower arranging for a gardening or floral magazine; exploring the lost continent of the Hawaiian Islands for a history, New Age or travel magazine or how to write a how-to book for an author’s magazine?
You can always get a tagline at the end of your article. Use the opportunity to promote your book. The best articles for marketing your book are those articles which rely on your expertise. However, most book magazine editors normally reject articles which blatantly promote a specific product, so it is advisable to keep the article from sounding like a sales pitch for the book. Just write an informative and useful article suitable to a particular book magazine and talk about your book where appropriate.

You Could be Paid

Expect to be paid anywhere from $60 to $1,000 for an article you have written based on your book. You can also be asked to give away some of the promotional writings. And why not, if it the deal means having the pieces published in a national book magazine which is read by anywhere from 30,000 to 600,000 people?

Probably, by now you have dozens of ideas for marketing your book through book magazines. To come up with even more:

  • Brainstorm with friends and family.
  • Study a variety of book magazines from cover to cover.
  • List as many topics related to the book as you can.

Do writing articles for book magazines sell books? I think so. Writing a book is demanding but fun. Promoting it can be intimidating and terrifying. That is why I recommend to writers to start promoting their books by doing something they love — writing.

Whats 1 of the Sexiest Methods for How to Write a Book? TIPS

Whats 1 of the Sexiest Methods for How to Write a Book?

If you don’t think writing a little ol’ tips book is good enough, think again. Check out this quote:

“A one-time leader in the consumer mail order catalog business generated a documented 13 percent sales increase of products in their catalog that they traced directly back to offering a tips booklet as a gift with any purchase in one edition of their catalog. That 13 percent increase represented millions of dollars in catalog sales.”

The tips book is one of the 6 simple recipes for how to write a book I show you in the bestselling Kindle book Instant Author Formula: 6 Simple Recipes for How to Write a Book Fast

After you check out the info below, I’ll share one of my most successful Awakened Authors, who has produced a tips book in both English and the same book in Spanish! He is a member of the international best seller book list with both!

Write a Tips Book

Here’s a great article on the power of writing a tips book! I have put some portions in bold red to draw your attention.

YES, Tips Booklets ARE Sexy … and Here’s Why

By Paulette Ensign May 13, 2013

Print

So you think that how-to tips booklets are way down the food chain when it comes to publishing? They are if you’re thinking New York Times Best-Seller List. However, that’s not the purpose of a tips booklet. It’s created for different reasons than a book.

Think about the highly successful study guides that have been published over the years, whether it was the Cliff Notes (are you old enough to remember those?) or other laminated 8.5” x 11” 2-sided guides currently on the market — all of which were how-to tips and notes about full-length books that were classics in some cases.

The study guides were created to introduce the reader to the topic and to ease into a more in-depth treatment of the subject. Sometimes that was all the student ever wanted or needed to accomplish the end result of an overview and/or to pass the test. Other times it whet the appetite to want more.

The same is true with Executive Summary products that exist today for full-length business books. The summaries may be written or delivered as audio recordings, printed or downloadable. These also serve the same purpose as the study guides do for high school students.

The full-length books were written, in many cases, with the goal of commercial critical success — New York Times Best-Seller List stuff. The summaries were also created for commercial success, just without the goal of public awards and acknowledgements for their writing style or for the number of units sold.

In both cases, the guides often generated more sales than those of the books they summarized, yet not always. After all, textbook sales were based on a decision made by someone other than the end-user. The book sale is already a done deal.

Tips booklets often prompt sales of whole books that are also written by the same author as the person who wrote the tips booklet. The tips booklets often trigger sales of other products and services the author creates, and sales for companies and organizations who use the tips booklets as marketing tools for their own products, services, and causes.

A one-time leader in the consumer mail order catalog business generated a documented 13 percent sales increase of products in their catalog that they traced directly back to offering a tips booklet as a gift with any purchase in one edition of their catalog. That 13 percent increase represented millions of dollars in catalog sales.

The booklet author licensed specific written rights to the company to use the booklet content, in exchange for a 5-digit licensing fee and lots of additional business because the author’s contact information was included in the booklet.

Still think a tips booklet isn’t sexy?

Who cared if the tips booklet got public recognition? The purpose of the booklet was solely to generate sales — sales of the booklet and sales of other products and services.

This is not to say the same couldn’t be done with full-length books, to use them to generate sales of other products and services. In fact, in some situations, a 200-page book is a better match for a particular campaign for a company. It depends on what the perceived value is of the product or service offer and the bonus attached to it.

Think of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) model. There are different size bonus packages available at many programs they produce, providing something for everyone, at different price levels. The booklet can be the ideal match at one level of PBS donation, and the book, bundled with an audio or video of the program can be appropriate for a higher donation amount.

How would you feel about selling over a million copies of a tips booklet, which then prompted sales of thousands or millions of units of other products or services you have? Starting to look a bit different now, isn’t it? Yes, much sexier!

The tips booklet is not the great American novel, and was never intended to be. Its purpose is a marketing tool and/or a direct source of income. Yes, the booklet and the book are both words that are distributed to teach the reader something. In this case, it’s about learning how to use booklets and books as powerful tools for your business and the businesses who purchase your booklet from you.

© 2013 Paulette Ensign – see original article source here.

Paulette Ensign, Founder and Owner of Tips Products International, had no idea she would sell well over a million copies of her 16-page tips booklet, 110 Ideas for Organizing Your Business Life, when she wrote it in 1991. Or that she would do so in four languages and various formats without spending a penny on advertising. Nothing in her background prepared her for that. Yet her can-do attitude triggered and supported those results. She has made a handsome living and a cross-country move from New York to San Diego by recycling the same 3500 words since 1991.,

5 Ways to Benefit from Writing a Tips book

Here are some ways YOU can benefit from writing a tips book:

  • Save your reader time and trouble – You as the expert look like such a genius in the eyes of your reader when you fix their painful problem. Often it’s the littlest thing that makes the biggest difference.
  • Lead the reader to the next logical step – Remember to invite the reader to opt in for something juicy and wonderful. Your opt-in is a BUYER when they’ve bought your book!
  • Generate customer leads VS freebie-seeker leads – Someone who has opened their wallet and paid even a dollar for something is 10 times more valuable as a lead than a frreebie seeker.
  • Include excerpt of another book/product – Your tips whet the reader’s appetite and demonstrate you know your stuff. Why not add a short excerpt from another book, or perhaps an info product?
  • Take the angst out of writing a book by publishing a tips book! – People get more caught up in head stuff about writing a book. This method truly takes the pain out of authoring.

Marketing for Small Scale Farming Success

I have been asked quite a bit about marketing for Small scale farming and commercial gardening. Marketing for small scale farming success is very important.

Beth from Kenya Africa sent us this email after an email I sent regarding marketing:

“Thank-you for such great insight. I live in Kenya Africa and I am passionate to farming. But marketing has always been my greatest challenge. How can I employ the CSA for success. Thank-you.”

So let me share with you the email I sent out about the Fires we are having close to my home and how I see the smoke and how it compares to marketing:

Black Forest Fire picture by Joseph Marsh credit Joseph Marsh Twitter 300x198 Marketing for Small Scale Farming Success

Joseph Marsh followed the Black Forest Fire and posted this photo just south
of the evacuation zone. (Credit: Joseph Marsh/Twitter)

We are surrounded by fires once again here in Colorado. My wife and I are in the voluntary evacuation zone.Smoke fills the skies and brings confusion and doubt to many.

So how does that help you create a profitable small scale farm? How is marketing a tool to use?

Have you heard the term CSA? Community Supported Agriculture?
This is one way to create marketing for small scale farming success. This is marketing method where you actually partner with your customers and pre-sell your products:

  • Produce
  • Fruit
  • Tools
  • Services

You are actually becoming partners with your customers before they receive their products. But to do this effectively,

they must Know, Like and Trust you.

Marketing for small scale farming is not smoke and mirrors.

Just as the smoke brings confusion and uncertainty, the marketing of today brings about confusion. There appears to be so much “smoky”
marketing, to know what is healthy and beneficial is clouded by hype and
splashy headlines.

Marketing is a way to reach those people who want what
you grow or produce. It is a process of meeting those people and sharing
with them the quality of what you have and the Benefits of what
you have to give them in exchange for value or appreciation. We
use money, whether it is in the form of cash, credit card payment
or by trading (exchange) for what you need.

We do what we do, not just to make money, but to make a
difference in other peoples lives. Yes,money is nice since we use
it to pay for living and growing, but it is not the end
all of our efforts. How many people do you know
live a healthy life eating money?

Marketing is meant to build relationships with your
customers. Find out what they want and need, so that you can
supply it to them.

So my point is this:

Get to know your customer. Build a relationship with them, then
over deliver on what you have promised.

Think about the businesses that you support. The ones that you love
to go to and rave about, if that is the type of business
that you want to grow. Then Build a profitable small scale farm by
creating value and marketing honestly about who you are and what you produce.

You can see how the smoke draws your attention away from the rest of the picture. Your customers may be looking for one solution. You may have THE solution for them, you just need to share your dream and plan with them.

But for CSA’s, the hope and risk is dependent upon how you set up your business and who you partner with.

Community supported Agriculture (CSA) is a great way to market your products and services.

Local Harvest (http://www.localharvest.org/csa/) Shared this following article about Community Supported Agriculture. I have read many articles, and have plans for a good CSA. I have been blessed to speak and interview many people who have started their own CSA. Just as with any business, there is risk, but when you are truly serving your customers, it becomes a community. Read the article from Local harvest!

For over 25 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer.

Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a “membership” or a “subscription”) and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.

This arrangement creates several rewards for both the farmer and the consumer. In brief…

Advantages for farmers:

  • Get to spend time marketing the food early in the year, before their 16 hour days in the field begin
  • Receive payment early in the season, which helps with the farm’s cash flow
  • Have an opportunity to get to know the people who eat the food they grow

Advantages for consumers:

  • Eat ultra-fresh food, with all the flavor and vitamin benefits
  • Get exposed to new vegetables and new ways of cooking
  • Usually get to visit the farm at least once a season
  • Find that kids typically favor food from “their” farm – even veggies they’ve never been known to eat
  • Develop a relationship with the farmer who grows their food and learn more about how food is grown

It’s a simple enough idea, but its impact has been profound. Tens of thousands of families have joined CSAs, and in some areas of the country there is more demand than there are CSA farms to fill it. The government does not track CSAs, so there is no official count of how many CSAs there are in the U.S.. LocalHarvest has the most comprehensive directory of CSA farms, with over 4,000 listed in our grassroots database.

Variations
As you might expect with such a successful model, farmers have begun to introduce variations. One increasingly common one is the “mix and match,” or “market-style” CSA. Here, rather than making up a standard box of vegetables for every member each week, the members load their own boxes with some degree of personal choice. The farmer lays out baskets of the week’s vegetables. Some farmers encourage members to take a prescribed amount of what’s available, leaving behind just what their families do not care for. Some CSA farmers then donate this extra produce to a food bank. In other CSAs, the members have wider choice to fill their box with whatever appeals to them, within certain limitations. (e.g. “Just one basket of strawberries per family, please.”)

CSAs aren’t confined to produce. Some farmers include the option for shareholders to buy shares of eggs, homemade bread, meat, cheese, fruit, flowers or other farm products along with their veggies. Sometimes several farmers will offer their products together, to offer the widest variety to their members. For example, a produce farmer might create a partnership with a neighbor to deliver chickens to the CSA drop off point, so that the CSA members can purchase farm-fresh chickens when they come to get their CSA baskets. Other farmers are creating standalone CSAs for meat, flowers, eggs, and preserved farm products. In some parts of the country, non-farming third parties are setting up CSA-like businesses, where they act as middle men and sell boxes of local (and sometimes non-local) food for their members.

Shared Risk
There is an important concept woven into the CSA model that takes the arrangement beyond the usual commercial transaction. That is the notion of shared risk: in most CSAs, members pay up front for the whole season and the farmers do their best to provide an abundant box of produce each week. If things are slim, members are not typically reimbursed. The result is a feeling of “we’re in this together”. On some farms the idea of shared risk is stronger than others, and CSA members may be asked to sign a policy form indicating that they agree to accept without complaint whatever the farm can produce.

Many times, the idea of shared risk is part of what creates a sense of community among members, and between members and the farmers. If a hailstorm takes out all the peppers, everyone is disappointed together, and together cheer on the winter squash and broccoli. Most CSA farmers feel a great sense of responsibility to their members, and when certain crops are scarce, they make sure the CSA gets served first. Still, it is worth noting that very occasionally things go wrong on a farm – like they do in any kind of business – and the expected is not delivered, and members feel shortchanged. At LocalHarvest we are in touch with CSA farmers and members from all over the country. Every year we hear get complaints about a few CSA farms (two to six farms a year, over the last nine years) where something happened and the produce was simply unacceptable. It might have been a catastrophic divorce, or an unexpected death in the family. Or the weather was abominable, or the farmer was inexperienced and got in over his/her head.

In our experience, if the situation seems regrettable but reasonable – a bad thing that in good faith could have happened to anyone – most CSA members will rally, if they already know and trust the farmer. These people are more likely to take the long view, especially if they have received an abundance of produce in the past. They are naturally more likely to think, “It’ll be better next year,” than are new members who have nothing to which to compare a dismal experience. The take-home message is this: if the potential for “not getting your money’s worth” makes you feel anxious, then shared risk may not be for you and you should shop at the farmers market

From this article, you can see how marketing is really a tool to communicate with others about your passion and how you serve others. The media and “Marketing Agencies” complete intensive studies on how to get people to buy. They spend millions of dollars to pinpoint who is going to purchase, when they will purchase, and who makes the decision to purchase.

Healthy Organic and nutritious food is becoming once again a very important issue.

Thank you for taking the time to research and decide to be part of the Solution community.

If you just want to grow your own food but do not know how to start, I recommend Food4Weath (for growing the easy way). I have been using the food4wealth system to greatly reduce my workload in the garden. The system works great for me.

Have a Great Day

Reader Mail:Growing Food and Finding Organic Seeds

I was asked a question by Jan,one of the readers of our blog,  who has decided to start growing her own food.  Her and her husband have some health issues as I had.  So Jan asked us  some very specific questions about growing food using the food4wealth system.   They like the Food4Wealth system, for organic vegetable gardening for themselves.

Planter 630 Reader Mail:Growing Food and Finding Organic Seeds

Growing food for sale is not their ideal.

First Jan , I want to thank you for sharing your challenges!  There are lots of people who are looking to improve their health by eating right.  I am one of them myself!    I was put on a heart transplant list, but since switching to Vegetarian, my health has improved to where I will not need a heart transplant.   The Hippocrates quote:  “Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food” is perfect.  The more we eat healthy, the healthier we become also.  Good clean water, Clean natural or organic food, exercise, proper breathing and of course a great mindset (attitude) are all critical to a healthy, happy life.

I hope and pray that you will continue to grow healthier every day!  The Food4wealth system works great for my wife and I.  We put up a greenhouse this year due to the extreme conditions here in Colorado at 7,000 feet elevation.

I am thinking that you will be dealing with the heat as you shared that your season for growing by seed is coming close to the time line to start quickly.

Getting Organic Seeds

Johnny’s Seed sells non-gmo, Organic and Heirloom seeds also.  They were selling some seeds from a company that was purchased by Monsanto. I was told by a supplier of mine, that they discontinued that line due to lack of trust for anything that Monsanto makes. I have not seen it in writing or read it myself so it is hearsay evidence at best at this point.

We have never grown using Bonnie Plants.  I see that they have been around since 1918. Looking at their site, they do have the following  statement:

“Committed to green gardening, we provide eco-friendly gardening products that are safe for the environment and easy to use. Our biodegradable peat pots and fiber pots have already prevented millions of pounds of plastic from entering landfills. Our commitment starts at our headquarters in Alabama, where we employ green growing practices such as sustainable energy production, reuse, and recycling.”

That is a good statement, so I hope that you are using their product.  I will contact them to follow up with an interview and write a post about them afterwords.   Monsanto did purchase Seminis,   Seminis is said to produce 40% of the fruit and vegetable seeds in the US.

Purchase seeds from someone you know is a good practice.

If you can go to a local hydroponics shop or nursery, they usually have access and sell Organic and heirloom seeds.  Just make sure that you verify that the seed packages have the USDA Organic label on the packages.  Burpee seeds also sell organic vegetable seeds.  Some of your local stores may even carry the seed that you are looking for.

I am amazed at how much information that you have gathered, and are sharing.  If I do not know the producer of the seeds, or someone who has been growing with them for years, I do not use them.

I always look for the USDA certified organic seeds, but I continue to read about new exceptions for different additives or food preparation standards that the USDA is allowing. Somewhat concerning for the “Organic” label.

Are they all bad for the consumer?  I do not know, but with my life on the line, I want to read the scientific data and talk to my brother who is a chemical engineer.  If I hear of a chemical that is not naturally occurring, I do not use it.

Alternative Growing Choices

container gardening 200x400 Reader Mail:Growing Food and Finding Organic Seeds

Since you are having a bit of a time getting started,

  • Can you start growing in containers?

You do not necessarily have to start with a 15X15 food garden.  Since you want to get started right away, can you make a smaller bed and then plant what you have.

  • What does your health allow you to do?
  • Are there activities that keep you from digging in the soil?
  • Do you have any relatives who could help you with the labor in exchange for some goodies at harvest?

Composting

For your Compost, horse manure is great.  Add your table scraps, no meat, and get some worms to help with the process.  Make sure that the compost bin is covered and reaches a temperature of 104 degrees F.   But you do not want the temperature to go above 149 degrees F.   That will cause the micro-organisms to die.

Using good soil, good water, good seeds as well as learning from your neighbors and local nursery you will continue to learn as you grow.

Composting Temperature Resource:
http://www.ehow.com/info_8069722_composting-bin-temperatures.html
This is an easy to understand explanation for you.

As long as you are making progress, just keep learning and growing!   Using Jonathan White’s system is a great start.  You can also ask the local feed stores or nursery’s what and who is growing what you want to eat and grow.  Thank you for asking questions, and I know I have not answered all of your questions yet.  Please get back to me on any item that you need clarification on.   If I do not know, I know who to ask for help.  My Wife, business partner and I love to help others.  We were created to help one another and It is a joy to do so.

Chris Downs Heather and Bugar Bear 362x276 Reader Mail:Growing Food and Finding Organic Seeds

You are doing a great job.  Vegan and Gluten-free is a great way to get back to being healthy.  Do not forget about your water though.  Clean, healthy water is important.
Looking forward to helping you reach your health goals through good, Organic, Food!

Growing Microgreens for Profit: A book review

craig 1501 Growing Microgreens for Profit: A book reviewCraig Wallin is an expert at growing and building a profitable lifestyle.  In his newest book titled: Growing Microgreens for Profit.  I believe he has come up with a perfect answer for many people who not only want to lots of their own food, but also create a second (or primary) income.

Here is the “notes” of some of what you learn in this book.

  • Learn what microgreens are, and why they’re a hot culinary commodity.
  • Learn “3 steps to the perfect microgreen crop.”
  • Receive instructions for building the “Microbox,” which can put you in business in less than a day!

I took this from his website:  http://www.profitableplantsdigest.com/.   I highly recommend this book.

As a traditional “Farmer and Gardener”,   I had not thought much about microgreens.  Sprouts had always come to mind, but never Microgreens.   I am excited about the opportunities in growing, selling and of course eating these tasty morsels.

You know how nice it is to walk through the garden, smelling the fresh scent of the young plants!  I use to take a nibble here or there of the young plants leaves.  Just to make sure that they were of the highest quality you know.  Have to keep the quality control in place.

But Craig has gone way beyond what most authors will do.  He gives you resources, examples of businesses who are successful with their microgreens that they sell.  I was very impressed with how simple a system can be.  With the ability to start growing immediately and creating an income within 7 to 10 days!

Craig always shares more than most people would, and has shown that he cares about health and wealth of his customers.

I highly recommend that you read Growing Microgreens for Profit and implement all that you learn as soon as you can.

Microgreen book Growing Microgreens for Profit: A book review
Sustainability is not just about the big systems, it is about a way of life that keeps you focused on your entire environment.  The food you eat, water, the air, and your neighbors.  The 4 legged, two legged and even the winged neighbors who also like the bountiful harvest that you produce.

I really do like the program that Craig shares.  In fact, we are implementing an entire portion of our new greenhouse to just Microgreens!  Thank you Craig!

Can I Grow Garlic on My New Farm?

I just got this great question from Marian from Ohio.  Can I grow garlic on my new farm?

8751275104 68d505702a z Can I Grow Garlic on My New Farm?

“Am trying to purchase an OH farm. It has quite a bit of rain, and not a lot of snow in winter, on almost 20 acres.

A modest farm, but flat and all useable, with a house and 2 big, sturdy barns for alpacas and storage.  Flat land, but no flood plain, and no standing water, which I observed.

Since I have no experience in farming, would like to know what I could plant that would have the right amount of precipitation and cold winter (for a 2-yr crop, if planted).

Only about 4 or 5 mature deciduous trees on the whole place, which animals can use for pasture shade.

Presently, about 10 acres are cropped out to a neighbor for 2013, by owner.   What could occupy an acre or so for a dependable yield without huge money investment that would yield a high rate of return?  Is it too wet for garlic?

What would you recommend? Presently, have no equipment, but could secure use of a tractor. I do have gardening experience, but never grew garlic.”

You Can Grow Garlic on your new Farm.

You just need to answer some specific questions. ( My friend David call this a cuss word: Depends).

It does depend upon some basics as well as how much you want to grow.  Since Marian wants to earn money from her farm, Let’s ask some questions:

I appreciate getting questions like these.  I love new challenges, especially if  I have more questions than I do answers for you.  So here is a list of questions that I have asked Marian to answer:

  • Can you tell me what is currently planted on the 10 acres that is leased?
  • Also, do you have any other farmers there who have their own CSA, (community supported agriculture)?
  • OH is a pretty big state.  What is the USDA Grow Zone?
  • Have you talked to a local Agriculture college, high school FFA chapter or your local county extension agent?
  • What do the other farms grow there?
  • What Life do you see yourself  living on the farm?
  • You said you wanted some Alpacas.  What about Chickens?

This farm, can grow garlic, but let me share a little basic information about Garlic:

Garlic grows best in well-drained soils. Sandy loam soil high in organic matter works best for garlic. Excessive moisture or drought will lower the price you can get for your bulbs, as well as lower your yields. A good quality green manure, Rye grass, peas, beans, alfalfa, buckwheat and even leaves are used to till into the soil.  You want to place this on your beds before you plant garlic.

Most recommendations are to add between 15 to 30 tons per acre depending upon the soil condition when you start.  Garlic likes a pH between 6 and 7.   Add Lime (organic of course) if pH is below 5.8.   The best thing to do is Test, Test and Test the soil. I would recommend calling a local garlic farm in Ohio for some local help.  I will share some recommendations after I speak with some of them.

What is it that you want to accomplish with your farm? Is it going to be your only source of income?

I have a basic list of questions that I ask any potential Farm business owners so that I can help them decide what it is that they want to do.

If you want, I can send you the “Test”.  It is really a list of questions to get you focused on what you need and want.  As well as what will sell in your area and who you can speak with locally.

I also want to share with you a very basic guideline to growing garlic.

No matter where you are located, there is always some way to become more self-sufficient and sustainable.   We have been testing systems for growing food, as well as finding others who are making a living on 1/10th of an Acre in the city of Los Angeles.

We are currently using the Food4Wealth system in a trailer park in Colorado at 7,000 feet elevation.

The best thing that I can tell you, is to start growing!  Keep at it and ask questions.

Decide what kind of food you want and enjoy the journey!!

Kevin Wilke "During the time I was using the Miracle Mindshift, out of nowhere significantly increased the money into my business while at the same significantly decreased the time I was working in my business.

So now, this is something that came out of nowhere because of this program.

And now... a new branding opportunity has opened and is going to be a great new income opportunity and a bigger business!"

Lynn Benjamin"Something so beautiful happens each day as I listen to the daily Miracle Mindshift. The best way I can describe the experience is simultaneously getting juiced up a vibrational level, or more, while getting settled right into, grounded into the center of my being.

Today, while listening to day 15, SEVERAL lights in the mansion turned on. A rapid download of aha's begin to make my heart feel different. I'm integrating now, and can say that I will now experience the four directions on a physical level, rather than having the four directions as just concepts. How part of the earth we are. I look forward to a deepening of this physical connection with the four directions.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom, I'm so grateful!"

- Lynn Benjamin

StacyQuinn"I went through the day 11 content, and I was hearing the same critical chatter in my mind. I realized how these rules, this previous programming was resisting my affirmations.

When I did my verbal affirmations, the chatter in my head was actually "talking" over my verbal affirmations. I was inches away from a mirror, looking directly in my own eyes, saying my affirmations and the voice in my head said:
"How could a gift to the world be so ugly?"

I was surprised by my own reaction. I started laughing. I mean belly laughing. I'm still laughing as I write this.

I don't know who that dude was but he's very rude and he's not my friend. I now know what he sounds like and how he talks.

I wanted to send this email to thank you. Because I'm not listening to that jerk anymore."

- Stacy Quinn

Monica_Leccese"I completed my first "Mindshift" after having battled the cacophony of voices and Master Trickster that seem to come along with changing thought patterns. I devoted a portion of each day to the practice, although not the same time each day: to the imaging, writing, and speaking of my declarations and affirmations. I recorded each "Gift" that I received and was sure to be grateful for each one, every day. By the end of the month my declarations were manifesting although not in an "overwhelming" manner. Still...at the end...I was so very grateful. I decided to commence another "shift" ...   I would create a circle, image my declarations, state them...but on a lesser scale than a full practice. After that decision I started to create a circle where I would light a flame to each direction. .......and that's when it happened......I shifted. I can only describe the feeling as the most amazing I have ever experienced: time, the world, my perspective...stopped; the energy rushing through me was so empowering it was nearly overwhelming. I had never before felt so alive, so en pointe in the moment, so...on...purpose. I had rubbed the magic lantern and the genie has held my hand ever since. I have been getting EVERYTHING I have been asking for, to the EXACT degree I have asked. Remember...you get what you ask for."
