Note from Ronda: One of the hats I wear as an author mentor is book marketing coach. Here is a way for you to expand your reach as an author and sell more books by getting into magazines. This is a guest blog post.
Book Marketing Coach: How To Promote Books In Book Magazines
You have spent sleepless nights working on your book and now it is out, why not promote the book doing what you do best — writing? Below are several examples on how you can promote your book using book magazine.
Book Excerpts
Many popular magazines use book excerpts. They normally want excerpts from books which relate to their magazine, for example, cooking magazines usually want excerpts from cookbooks, poetry magazines want to excerpt poetry books and a travel magazine will quote travel books.
If your book features Native African art in Southern Africa, for example, a South Africa travel or history magazine might be interested in publishing your work on South Africa tribes. An excerpt from a book on writing tips for home-based businesses can provide a good content for a writer’s magazine.
Topic Submission
You should submit articles on topics which are only remotely related to the book you have written to promote it. For example, if you have written a book on creative parenting, you can promote it through articles featuring storytelling techniques for parents, how to teach children money awareness, how parents can uphold family traditions and tips for helping parents bond with their new baby. But you can also plug this book even if you are writing an article about snails. You can mention, for example, that when you ware writing the parent book, you met a father who paid his 6-year old son a dollar to catch garden snails.
How about an article on early culture comparisons for a history or an ethnic magazine; flower arranging for a gardening or floral magazine; exploring the lost continent of the Hawaiian Islands for a history, New Age or travel magazine or how to write a how-to book for an author’s magazine?
You can always get a tagline at the end of your article. Use the opportunity to promote your book. The best articles for marketing your book are those articles which rely on your expertise. However, most book magazine editors normally reject articles which blatantly promote a specific product, so it is advisable to keep the article from sounding like a sales pitch for the book. Just write an informative and useful article suitable to a particular book magazine and talk about your book where appropriate.
You Could be Paid
Expect to be paid anywhere from $60 to $1,000 for an article you have written based on your book. You can also be asked to give away some of the promotional writings. And why not, if it the deal means having the pieces published in a national book magazine which is read by anywhere from 30,000 to 600,000 people?
Probably, by now you have dozens of ideas for marketing your book through book magazines. To come up with even more:
- Brainstorm with friends and family.
- Study a variety of book magazines from cover to cover.
- List as many topics related to the book as you can.
Do writing articles for book magazines sell books? I think so. Writing a book is demanding but fun. Promoting it can be intimidating and terrifying. That is why I recommend to writers to start promoting their books by doing something they love — writing.
