Are herbal supplements for depression the safe way to treat my depression?

Janet wondered why she was so sad. She often felt she could not make it through the day. Some days she didn’t even want to make it through the day. It was one of those days.

Her physician had diagnosed depression, but he wanted to give her prescription medications. She wondered if there were herbal supplements for depression that would be just as effective. How effective were they? Was there anything else?

Prescription medications for depression had a long list of side effects. She did not want to risk that, so she considered searching for safe herbal supplements for depression. She wanted to get better. And wondered what would happen if she didn’t get better. Oh, my! Her feelings of hopelessness became overwhelming.

When she read information on the Internet, it was often conflicting. One site that is totally medical tells you to take pills. Another site on alternative medicine tells you not to take prescription medicines because of the dangers. All of the places she looked cautioned about interference with other medications you take for illnesses like diabetes and heart disease. It can be very confusing. It made her want to give up again.

Reading some of the major medical sites that suggest using alternative and complementary medicine for the treatment of her terrible depression increased Janet’s confusion.

She wondered, “Is there any place I can find help and feel confident about it?”

She decided to read about some of the herbal supplements commonly used or advised for depression.

  • Hypericum perforatum, commonly known as St. John’s Wort, has been used for centuries for a variety of ailments, but most commonly for depression. This is a dietary supplement and is not approved as a treatment for depression in the United States. However, in other countries it is commonly prescribed for mild depression. (If you take other medications for depression or other illnesses, St. John’s Wort can interfere with their benefits, so check with your pharmacist or physician on this.
  • SAMe is a synthetic formulation of S-adenosylmethionine, which is produced by the body. It is also classified as a dietary supplement in the United States, and not as a treatment for depression. SAMe has few side effects.
  • Low levels of folate can slow down the results of certain antidepressants. It can also be used as a supplement to antidepressants to increase their efficiency. So talk to your doctor or pharmacist about this, as well.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids are found in cold-water fish. They are also in flax seed, walnuts and flax oil. Taken in food or as a supplement, they have been shown to help depression. This is especially true when taken in conjunction with antidepressants.

Consider a combination of safe herbal supplements for depression.

The above supplements are not monitored by the FDA in the same manner as medications. You don’t know exactly what you are getting, because labeling is left to the discretion of the manufacturer. So, it is important to educate yourself about the interaction of these supplements with the medications you are already taking.

What Are the Best Natural Treatments for Depression?

The loss of her husband, Gary, took Alice into a deep depression. The problem was that no matter what over-the-counter supplements she took to help her, they did not seem to work. She believed that these were the only natural treatments for depression that existed.

Rita wakes up in the morning and wonders what tragedy will occur today. It started with  feelings of being blue.

“Is there anything that can make me feel better, or is this my destiny?
Maybe this is what depression feels like. Maybe I will never feel better. Is life truly worth all of this?
There are no feelings of joy, or even happiness in the slightest degree.
I do not feel I can go on feeling so bad. Would herbal supplements for depression work for me?”

As Rita’s depression deepened, she started her search for  herbal supplements for depression.

• The most frequently mentioned was St. John’s Wort. There have been clinical trials that have shown promise. It is also said that it will take four to six weeks for the effectiveness to be noticeable. Warnings have also been issued about interaction with other prescribed and over-the-counter medications that may be taken.

• Omega-3 fatty acids are reported to increase brain function. Studies have found links between the dietary deficit of omega-3 fatty acids and depression. Countries that depend on fish for the bulk of their diet have been shown to have a rate of depression that is 10 times lower than North America.

• Folic acid is a B vitamin that is often found to be low in people with depression. Common medications such as aspirin and birth control can deplete the body of folic acid.

• Dietary changes can increase the neurotransmitters in the brain. By reducing the intake of sugar, avoiding caffeine, avoiding alcohol, taking supplements of magnesium and B6 can help as well.

When is it Time to find Natural Treatments for Depression?

Louise was always an active and enthusiastic person. She had a position in human resources at a small company in her city. Her basic insecurities began showing as the economy plunged. Although she had been taking over-the-counter supplements for her ensuing depression, they did not seem to be working.

Perhaps it was time to pursue other natural treatments for depression.

She noticed a lack of new employees being accepted for employment. She also took notice of retiring or resigning employees not being replaced. When you are in a human resources position, these are warning signs.

 Traveling again, Anne had to change planes. This was a small plane with an extremely steep staircase, and they discouraged her from climbing it because of her weak legs. So she was sitting in a wheelchair waiting for them to bring a ramp out to the plane.  

It was extremely hot out here where the plane stood on the tarmac. When she finally boarded the plane, she noticed the head stewardess also seemed to be frustrated and tired and hot. She felt such understanding and compassion. The stewardess came over and offered her another glass of water to cool down and make her more comfortable. 

The stewardess (Emma) was sitting in one of those straight-backed pull-down seats that look very uncomfortable, and there was an empty seat next to Anne. So she said, “Oh, I’d  be happy if you’d sit here and join me.” Emma just chuckled, but she felt acknowledged and it showed.

Anne really wanted to show her appreciation, so she smiled and joked, and she said, “You know, I have this chocolate with me that I was just going to save for a tough moment and enjoy.”  She asked Emma her name, and said “Do you like chocolate?”  And she got a big grin and “Oh, absolutely!” and Anne said, “I’d like you to have it, just to know that your generosity and caring has been really appreciated.” 

Emma smiled and put it in her pocket. This brought them both into a more relaxed and happy state.

Anne said, “Don’t leave it too long in your pocket or it will melt. You have to eat it before that!”  And they both laughed.  It’s in those moments when we decide to share from our gratitude and to give to another that we receive the greatest happiness. We are filled enough to think and do for others, as well as to take care of ourselves.

We create happiness from our giving. It is this adventure that magnifies the beauty of our lives.

Should she trust the young stranger offering to help with her luggage? Hmmm. He said he would change trains with her, too. Oh, my! This was the first time in years Karen had traveled alone, with luggage, and with no wheelchair. Should she even dare to take a train?!  

She was in pain, and her legs ached. She could feel a state of fear coming over her, and a little dread, but excitement as well.  

She wasn’t able to move her luggage by herself; she needed help. So she usually traveled with a friend or a wheelchair, or both. But today, for the first time, she had ventured off on her own with no wheelchair and no companion, trusting that she would get there all right. Karen believed in herself enough to take the risk.

But this was the hard part. There was no shuttle from the airport to her hotel; it was too far. You had to take a train.  And the last direct train had stopped running. She would have to change trains with luggage that she couldn’t manage herself.  

So here she was, immersed in a big adventure, trusting a young man with an enthusiastic smile. And she would manage somehow to get to her station.  

All went well.  Her new friend helped her change trains and get to the right stop.  He couldn’t get off, as he was going farther. So he helped Karen and got the luggage onto the platform.  He grinned as he waved, “Take care!”

Then panic almost struck. No one was there. She was weak now and tired from the traveling.  Her legs were barely working and she needed help.  

The station was empty. And somehow she had to get to an elevator and up a flight of stairs to meet her shuttle. She didn’t know how she would do it. She just closed her eyes and bowed in prayer.  

In her moment of distress, a man appeared like an angel. She was so grateful. It had been frightening to arrive at a completely empty train station, but she hadn’t had to wait at all. This man was happy to help her get to the elevator and out to the gate. The shuttle was waiting, but the driver had not been able to get in the gate.  

Amazingly, she was escorted to the shuttle and to her destination. The miracle presented itself.

It took going inside, courageously trusting in people and in the deep perfection of her life. It took believing in herself, “knowing” that she would be taken care of, if she asked earnestly inside. And she was doing that.

So her “Caretaker” (for this adventure) arrived at the perfect moment.

She threw with her head back, laughing out loud with delight, when suddenly, Shirley started to choke. It was like a jolt that shocked her. Something must have caught in her throat. She had just been relaxing, sipping her tea and taking a bite of her croissant, as she sat on the couch talking to her mother about the trip they planned together.

Gasping for air, she kept choking, unable to swallow and clear her throat. As she focused on her breath, trying to get air, she was aware of her mother’s calm, quiet presence. She tried to talk, to tell her mother  she would be okay. Her mom replied, “Don’t try to talk; just relax and get your breath.”

After quite a struggle, Shirley began to get her breath back, and then she relaxed. She was so impressed with her mother’s presence, and her balanced, focused attention. She felt a wave of love. Shirley’s mother had not been the most physically affectionate person and Shirley had not always been sure of her support. But in this moment, she felt very loved and supported.

“Mom, how can you stay so calm when I was virtually freaking out, not able to breathe?”  Her mom answered Shirley, “I am old enough to know that that kind of choking happens to elderly people…”

“Mom, are you calling me old?! That’s the problem. I’m getting old, so I’m choking!” Shirley almost cried.

“No, Sweetheart. I am old enough to know that choking happens more as you get older, and it’s not usually very bad. And I’ve lived enough to have a good attitude. I expect the best, and I know that everything will come out alright,” replied her mother. “I’ve lived well, and I have a peacefulness about life. Maybe it’s my Unity church.  I’ve  learned a lot, and I feel great with my life. I’m happy!”

It was a good day, until that awful moment. Then everything went wrong for some reason you don’t understand. (It was just like when Sally lashed out at her husband Bill and made an angry comment that just cut him down and hurt deeply.)

Have you done something you regret? Are you concerned that someone may have felt put down or gotten their feelings hurt by something you did or said? You may think what you did caused them pain.

First of all, know that you did not intend to hurt them, or hurt their feelings. (If you did intend to, just admit that honestly to yourself, and know that that can happen, and it does happen to most people at some time. You are not a “bad” person. You are lovable and nothing can change that.)

Second, know that you could not hurt anyone else’s feelings without their participation. They must have taken what you said in a hurtful way in order to be hurt. It must match what they think about themselves. That is what makes it painful.

Even still, you can make it better now.

You can choose now to give them a new comment in a more positive way. You can offer them a new opportunity to take feedback in a good, nurturing or empowering way.

If you choose to:

  • Think of some way you can offer a compliment or an appreciation of them.
  • Then find a way to get it to them, where they will see or hear it.
  • Now, just imagining it, how do you feel now?

If you choose to take the action and do it, a little act can have a huge impact! (For you and the other person, and the whole universe!)
