Indie Publishers: Make the Most of Kindle Unlimited Video Tutorial

Kindle Unlimited is like Netflix for books. It’s Amazon’s $10/month unlimited lending library. Some indie publishers complain all their book sales dried up since enrolling their books. Others are doing great.

Here is a video tutorial showing you how to make the most of it.

Some ideas to Keep Kindle Unlimited from Robbing You of Royalties:

Put only the first book in a series into KDP Select.
OR enroll a book for 3 months then take it out.
OR rotate boks in and out of the program, perhaps once a year.
Remember you can exclude a KDP Select title from KU by following the procedure

Amazon’s Indie Author Smackdown: Changes to KDP Select Payouts

Amazon has changed the way it pays authors who participate in the KDP Select program. Here is the email from Amazon:

In mid-June, we announced a change to the way we will pay for authors’ participation in Kindle Unlimited (KU) and the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library (KOLL) (https://kdp.amazon.com/community/ann.jspa?annID=786). Starting today, the payout of the KDP Select Global Fund will be based on the number of pages KU and KOLL customers read.

In mid-July, we will post results for the fund in June, expected to be at least $11M, making June the largest monthly payout so far. As previously announced, the KDP Select fund for July and August will also be at least $11M.

KDP authors can now see the Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count (KENPC V1.0) for each of their KDP Select titles on the “Promote and Advertise” page in their Bookshelf (https://kdp.amazon.com/bookshelf). Please keep in mind that, because it is based on settings specific to this program and intended to normalize the count across all KDP Select titles, KENPC may well vary from page counts listed on a book’s Amazon detail page or page counts for a print book. As measured using KENPC, during the month of June, KU and KOLL customers read nearly 1.9 billion Kindle Edition Normalized Pages (KENPs) of KDP Select books.

Some questions Authors have:

What’s a Kindle page?

There are no page numbers in Kindle, and anyone can adjust the font. Thus, it is unclear what they’re calling a page. They’re normalizing, but will it really be in our favor?

How will this affect payouts for the average indie publisher?

The program is new enough that it’s hard to tell.

It feels to me like a way to apply a screwdriver to a place where sun doesn’t shine!

Gathering pre-orders before the official release of a book is a great way to build anticipation for your book. But until today, you could only do this with books published in physical ink.

Today, Kindle Direct Publishing announced that Kindle authors can now offer pre-orders of their books up to 90 days before the release date.

Here are the details straight from KDP:

We’re excited to announce that you can now make your new books available for pre-order in Kindle Stores worldwide. With a few quick and easy steps you can create a pre-order page up to 90 days in advance of your book’s release date–your pre-order product page will be created within 24 hours. When you make your book available for pre-order, customers can order the book anytime leading up to the release date you set. We will deliver it to them on that date.

One advantage of using pre-order is that you can start promoting your Kindle book pre-order page on Author Central, Goodreads, your personal website, and other places ahead of its release to help build excitement for your book. Also, pre-orders will contribute toward sales rank and other Kindle Store merchandising ahead of release, which can help more readers discover your book.

How can you make the most of offering Kindle pre-orders?

1. Drip tips, tidbits, scenes, or other tantalizing morsels from your book over time on your blog, in social media, and at live events.

I’m an even-tempered person by and large, but one of the things that gets my hackles up is spammy “books” on Kindle. The problem is that because Kindle Direct publishing (KDP) is free, people are finding all kinds of ways to game the system and publish steaming piles of poop onto Amazon.

While Amazon is cracking down on “books” that are nothing more than private label rights garbage with a new cover and title, there is still way too much useless material being belched into the system.

Here’s an article from Reuters. It’s a 3–year old article as I publish this, but it points to an ongoing issue of QUALITY books.

(Reuters) – Spam has hit the Kindle, clogging the online bookstore of the top-selling eReader with material that is far from being book worthy and threatening to undermine Amazon.com Inc’s publishing foray.

Thousands of digital books, called ebooks, are being published through Amazon’s self-publishing system each month. Many are not written in the traditional sense.

Instead, they are built using something known as Private Label Rights, or PLR content, which is information that can be bought very cheaply online then reformatted into a digital book.

These ebooks are listed for sale — often at 99 cents — alongside more traditional books on Amazon’s website, forcing readers to plow through many more titles to find what they want.

Aspiring spammers can even buy a DVD box set called Autopilot Kindle Cash that claims to teach people how to publish 10 to 20 new Kindle books a day without writing a word.

This new phenomenon represents the dark side of an online revolution that’s turning the traditional publishing industry on its head by giving authors new ways to access readers directly.

Have Times Changed?

That Reuters article came out 3 years ago, and KDP is definitely on the lookout for spammy books, but that hasn’t stopped greedy entrepreneurs from selling package that promise to help you crush it, make a killing, and all sorts of other AGGRESSIVE, war-like ways of talking about raking in cash by mass-producing garbage and publishing it on Kindle.

here are 3 helpful guidelines for Kindle publishing.

Remember that a book is a relationship between the author and reader. You won’t grow a true legacy with a , poorly written private label rights book or set of articles.
Publish YOUR work. That’s how you build YOUR legacy.
Write the book directly to your ideal customer, not a generalized “someone out there.”

I remember when I first started thinking about publishing a book about 7 years ago. The rampant feeling then was, “if you can’t get a REAL publisher to publish your book, it must not be worth anything.”

The times, they are a-changin’!

Now, for most authors who come to me for mentoring, I highly recommend independent publishing (self publishing).

For one thing, it’s not just “vanity presses” like there used to be. There are nice, legitimate, affordable (even FREE) ways to publish a book.

Writers: do you have an idea for a book in mind? Have you already finished it? Maybe you’ve sent your manuscript out into the black hole of publishing companies, waiting to hear an answer – any answer – even it if is the dreaded “Thank you for your inquiry; however we are not accepting new author’s at this time.” Or maybe you are toying around with the idea of self-publishing your work.

There are no shortages of examples of self-publishing success. For instance, “50 Shades of Gray” was self-published. You don’t need me to convey the success of that series to make the point that not only is it possible to self-publish, but that you can actually pioneer your writing career with this method.

According to a Bowker Report published in October of 2012, “The number of self-published books produced annually in the U.S. has nearly tripled, growing 287 percent since 2006, and now tallies more than 235,000 print and ‘e’ titles.”

When it comes to deciding between a large publishing company, and self-publishing, the writing is on the wall.

And guess what? Even if your book is picked up by a large publishing house, you are still expect to hit the ground running and do your own promotional legwork. If you are going to have to do it anyway, why not own the rights to your work and make a larger profit from your sales?

Other Things to Consider

The downside to self-publishing is that you are on your own financially until you can start profiting from your book sales. Large publishers often pay authors an “advance” to get the book started. But in the case of self-publishing, there are no advances. But you do have tools at your disposal.

For example, there is Kickstarter, the online “crowd funding” tool that allows you to create a campaign for your project and have others fund it for you. Some have been able to quit their day jobs and devote their undivided time and energy this way, getting a project off the ground before any profits come rolling in.

Or, you can do things the old fashioned way: come home from your day job, put a large pot of coffee on, and burn the midnight oil for months on end until your story makes its way onto paper. It takes a unique blend of time, passion, and a little bit of crazy to write a book. And my hunch is that if you are truly a passionate writer, you’ll choose the latter.

In short, you no longer need access to a large publishing house to publish your book. Now, all you need is an idea, some time, and a computer to get your writing down. With the endless options to explore to self-publish your book, there is literally no one stopping you. So I just have one question: what are you waiting for?

Kindle Publishing: How Do I Price My Book?

One of the considerations for Kindle Publishing is the all-important question, “How much do I charge for my book?”

Kindle Direct Publishing is a great “power to the people” service of Amazon.com that lets anybody publish a book on Kindle. Now anybody can become an author easily and for free.

Almost every day, someone asks me, “How do I price my book?”

One person I know decided to follow the typical internet marketing practice of charging $27 for his ebook. Think about your potential customer who may not already know and love you. Are they likely to hit that buy with 1 click button for your book at that price?

I don’t know about you, but WOWZA that’s a LOT of money to pay for a little book! The book doesn’t cook my meals for me or cure an illness. It’s not a huge compendium of resources or tips.

I imagine he would have many many more sales at a lower price point.

A reader has a price point in mind that constitutes the amount they’re likely to pay for a book.

Also, Amazon.com, which has a long-standing position as a company that knows a thing or 3 about marketing, even rewards authors with a higher royalty for pricing their book within a particular range.

Authors who write a book and publish using Kindle Direct Publishing to make your books available on Kindle have the option to allow your book to be loaned out for 5 days.

Some people feel you should not let your book be loaned out, because that would take away from your readers and negate the lead generating power of a book.

I say that’s crap.

I say that anything you can do to make more people aware of you will yield fruit sooner or later.

Hello from KDP!

We’re excited to introduce KDP Select – a new option dedicated to KDP authors and publishers worldwide, featuring a fund of $500,000 in December 2011 and at least $6 million in total for 2012!

KDP Select gives you a new way to earn royalties, reach a broader audience, and use a new set of promotional tools.

Here’s how KDP Select works:

When you make any of your titles exclusive to the Kindle Store for at least 90 days, those with US rights will automatically be included in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library and can earn a share of a monthly fund.

The monthly fund for December 2011 is $500,000 and will total at least $6 million in 2012.

If you haven’t checked it out already, the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library is a collection of books that eligible US Amazon Prime members can borrow for free once a month with no due dates.

You’ll also now have access to a new set of promotional tools, starting with the option to promote your KDP Select-enrolled titles for FREE for up to 5 days every 90 days.

How your share of the monthly fund is calculated:

Your share of the monthly fund is based on your enrolled titles’ share of the total number of borrows across all participating KDP titles in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.

For example, if total borrows of all participating KDP titles are 100,000 in December and your book was borrowed 1,500 times, you will earn $7,500 in additional royalties from KDP Select in December.

Enrolled titles will remain available for sale to any customer in the Kindle Store and you will continue to earn your regular royalties on those sales.

What this means to you:

KDP Select gives you access to a whole new source of royalties and readers- you not only benefit from a new way of making money,

but you also get the chance to reach even more readers by getting your book in front of a growing number of US Amazon Prime customers: readers and future fans of your books that you may have not had a chance to reach before!

Additionally, the ability to offer your book for free will help expand your worldwide reader base.

How to enroll:

KDP Select is available for titles participating in both the 70% and 35% royalty options. You can immediately start by enrolling a single title, your whole catalog, or anything in between.

If you’re interested in enrolling a title that’s already uploaded, simply click “Enroll” next to the book in your Bookshelf. To enroll multiple titles that are already uploaded, select the boxes next to any number of titles, then click “Actions” and choose “Enroll these books in KDP Select.” The titles you choose will be enrolled immediately.

If you’re interested in enrolling a new title, simply check the “Enroll this book in KDP Select” box while submitting details about your book and proceed to publish the book as you normally would. For new titles, enrollment takes effect once the book is available for sale on our website.

The plan is to turn that freebie lead into a buyer and ultimately into someone who does business with you long term.
