Book Review: The Art of Social Media by Guy Kawasaki and Peg Fitzpatrick

Since every author needs social media and since I’m always reading articles and books to keep on top of things, I thought I’d share one of the excellent books about social media.

And it won’t overwhelm you with hundreds of services you don’t understand, either. Please take a close look at this book review and grab your copy of…

The Art of Social Media by Guy Kawasaki and Peg Fitzpatrick

The Art of Social Media by Guy Kawasaki and Peg Fitzpatrick

One thing I love about this book is that it won’t overwhelm you. It gets right to the questions you probably have including:

  • How to optimize your profile
  • How to get more followers
  • How to respond to comments

Throughout the book are wonderful little gems like this one from chapter 1:

Most platforms enable you to add a tagline to your profile. Make this a mantra – two to four words that explain why you or your company exists.

Nike: authentic athletic performance

Canva: democratized design

Here’s a peek at most of the table of contents:

Table of Contents of the Art of Social Media

I found myself highlighting and taking notes in certain places even though I’ve done a lot with social media. That mantra piece is fabulous!

And where I didn’t actively take notes, I appreciated the advice. The authors admonish us to remain positive and agree to disagree in Chapter 5 about responding to comments. Good advice for everyone on social, business/author or not!

Another of the tips I don’t see as many people using is from Chapter 5 about integrating social with blogging. It’s tip 54 which shows you how to entice people to follow you.

Unlike Social Media Just for Writers by Frances Caballo, which I reviewed previously, The Art of Social Media will not overwhelm. I feel it gives a more actionable method for incorporating social media into your work. At the same time, both books have their place and are useful.

I like how Kawasaki and Fitzpatrick help you understand something powerfully helpful in each network without going into the weeds. You’ll find out how to run Google Hangouts on Air, post to LinkedIn, share events, run a Twitter chat and more without wanting to scream.

Chapter 10 in Art of Social media will probably be a favorite of yours…”How to Avoid Looking Clueless.” This could appear that you feel more at ease even if you don’t feel at ease.

Is Guest Blogging a Good Way to Reach My Ideal Audience?

Is Guest Blogging a Good Way to Reach My Ideal Audience?

by Ronda Del Boccio, The Story Lady

I wish people would ask less about how to write a book than about the REAL issue on their hearts, which for people who come to me is about how to make a difference with their book.

When I mentor visionary individuals through the transformative process of writing a book  I often say, there’s more to being an author than just writing and publishing a book.

Well, technically if your sole aim is creative expression and you have no desire to leave a legacy, then I suppose it doesn’t matter whether another person ever sees your writing. But if that were the case, you would not be here reading this article.

Who Is Your Ideal Audience?

What’s an author without an audience to touch?

People who come to me want to make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. And before any messenger can imprint a message onto people’s hearts, it’s important to know who cares about that message.

Those who care will resonate with the message.

That message needs to be in the book, yes. AND it needs to be “out there” on blogs, in articles, in videos – in all the various places and spaces where your audience lives.

The Power of Guest Blogging

Guest blogging is a way to reach your ideal audience where they are, on the blogs they are already frequenting.

Any old blog won’t do.

Don’t think that slapping your work on any website, even a very popular one, is right just because it’s popular.

One of my friends put up a profile and article on the AARP website, only to get banned within an hour because of how he presented himself.

This fabulous article gives terrific advice on how to be a highly valuable guest blogger. There are also some resources that can help you find blogs.

How To Submit A Guest Post That Will Be Accepted!

Original article source: BadRedheadMedia.com: by guest  Peg Fitzpatrick (co-owner of 12Most) and creator of #MyBookClub on Twitter!

Guest posting is a great way for new bloggers to hone their writing skills as well as expand their fledgling network. However, there is a right and a wrong way to go about requesting a guest post spot.

  • First, make a list of blogs that you really like to read and respect their content. Do they accept guest posts? Who is the contact person and what is their email address?
  • Do research on the site prior to submission. What type of content do they share? Does this fit with your niche or goal for blogging? Make sure this it is a good fit for you and the blog; you need to provide them with a reason why you should write for them.
  •  Spend some time coming up with a title and a few sentences about what your post will be.  The title is essential and should pique the interest of the reviewer. This is the story of your post boiled down to the essence. It should be tweetable and easy to share. Every post title should be:
  • unique
  • interesting
  • informative
  • At this point, you may write an email to the blog contact person. This should be a personal email and start out with a friendly introduction. Make sure that you are following whatever guidelines they list on their site for guest posting. Send a link to your blog and a few links to some of your best work.

Here are a few examples of what big blogs have for guest posting requirements:

How to Guest Post for 12 Most

Want to Write for Social Media Examiner?

Guidelines and Suggestions for Guest Posts at ProBlogger

Top tips for submission:

  1. Be polite — please and thank you still go a long way
  2. Spell check and re-read your submission prior to sending. If you can’t write a proper email, don’t waste their time submitting a post. Carelessness and lack of attention to detail are evident in many of the emails I receive for 12 Most submissions. These get a rejection letter.
  3. Provide them with all the information that they request. Be thorough!
  4. Don’t pitch the same idea to multiple blogs. Be considerate.
  5. Follow up in a few days if you haven’t heard from them unless, like Social Media Examiner, they say that they receive many requests and it may take up to sixty days for a response.
  6. Be prepared to actually write the posts that are accepted. There are times that people submit a request, are approved to post and then never follow up with the post. Don’t flood the blogosphere with more writing requests that you can handle. If you have an idea that you really love, write the entire post while you are waiting. Impress the blog owner with a perfectly crafted post upon approval. Meeting the commitment that you made to the blog is essential for relationship and reputation building.
  7. Be prepared to send a short bio with your submission. Don’t make this overly promotional but you may be able to include a link to your blog and a few social media links as well
  8. If you are accepted for submission, follow the guidelines and submit your post in a timely manner. Make sure that you watch the blog to see when your post is running and reply to comments. Many large blog sites will not have time to contact you individually when your post will be live, remember they are receiving a lot of requests. Be considerate of their time. Also, make sure that you share the post with your network of followers and tag the blog owner so they know you are proud to be a part of their blogging community. Saying thank you via email or tweet is also a good gesture.

I hope that you consider these common sense suggestions next time you are submitting a request to guest post, and I wish you luck in your guest posting endeavors.

How have you had success with guest blogging? Have you started submitting guest posts to other blogs? What other tips can you add to guest blogging success?

Success Stories

Kevin Wilke "During the time I was using the Miracle Mindshift, out of nowhere significantly increased the money into my business while at the same significantly decreased the time I was working in my business.

So now, this is something that came out of nowhere because of this program.

And now... a new branding opportunity has opened and is going to be a great new income opportunity and a bigger business!"

Lynn Benjamin"Something so beautiful happens each day as I listen to the daily Miracle Mindshift. The best way I can describe the experience is simultaneously getting juiced up a vibrational level, or more, while getting settled right into, grounded into the center of my being.

Today, while listening to day 15, SEVERAL lights in the mansion turned on. A rapid download of aha's begin to make my heart feel different. I'm integrating now, and can say that I will now experience the four directions on a physical level, rather than having the four directions as just concepts. How part of the earth we are. I look forward to a deepening of this physical connection with the four directions.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom, I'm so grateful!"

- Lynn Benjamin

StacyQuinn"I went through the day 11 content, and I was hearing the same critical chatter in my mind. I realized how these rules, this previous programming was resisting my affirmations.

When I did my verbal affirmations, the chatter in my head was actually "talking" over my verbal affirmations. I was inches away from a mirror, looking directly in my own eyes, saying my affirmations and the voice in my head said:
"How could a gift to the world be so ugly?"

I was surprised by my own reaction. I started laughing. I mean belly laughing. I'm still laughing as I write this.

I don't know who that dude was but he's very rude and he's not my friend. I now know what he sounds like and how he talks.

I wanted to send this email to thank you. Because I'm not listening to that jerk anymore."

- Stacy Quinn

Monica_Leccese"I completed my first "Mindshift" after having battled the cacophony of voices and Master Trickster that seem to come along with changing thought patterns. I devoted a portion of each day to the practice, although not the same time each day: to the imaging, writing, and speaking of my declarations and affirmations. I recorded each "Gift" that I received and was sure to be grateful for each one, every day. By the end of the month my declarations were manifesting although not in an "overwhelming" manner. Still...at the end...I was so very grateful. I decided to commence another "shift" ...   I would create a circle, image my declarations, state them...but on a lesser scale than a full practice. After that decision I started to create a circle where I would light a flame to each direction. .......and that's when it happened......I shifted. I can only describe the feeling as the most amazing I have ever experienced: time, the world, my perspective...stopped; the energy rushing through me was so empowering it was nearly overwhelming. I had never before felt so alive, so en pointe in the moment, so...on...purpose. I had rubbed the magic lantern and the genie has held my hand ever since. I have been getting EVERYTHING I have been asking for, to the EXACT degree I have asked. Remember...you get what you ask for."
