5 Photography Tips from a Mostly Blind Award-Winning Photographer.

At my recent Lions Club meeting, one of our members gave me a TShirt from Leader Dogs for the Blind, where I am going to get my next guide dog hopefully sometimes this summer or fall. All 3 of the photos sent to me for posting on our club’s Facebook page were blurry.

Perhaps you’ve noticed that most people can’t take a decent picture. I’m really not sure why. I mean…if you’re fully sighted, you can see what’s in your frame and you can see whether the resulting digital photo is blurry, right? So what’s the issue?

As an author, it can be handy to take good photos. You might be able to sell pictures with a story and earn more money. Or you might be able to sell the images outright.

As with so many things, you probably haven’t thought through or been taught a few basic tips that will make you a good photographer. So let the blind girl help you see more clearly and take excellent photos!

This is the photo from the WriteOnPurpose.com header. The butterfly was kind enough to strike a post for me!

ButterflyPalace2015-e1427135154107.jpg

I’m mostly blind. Blind enough to travel with a white cane or a guide dog. Yet I managed to take pretty decent pictures. I usually manage to get a clear shot without a junky background, and have even won two award for my photos and had another selected for a book cover.

While I am by no means a big-time photographer, perhaps I can help you be a better photographer, so please allow me to share a few tips that work great for me.

1. Don’t be afraid to take a lot of pictures

The vast majority of people have either a phone, tablet or digital camera, so who cares if you take 20 or more photos to find a couple of great shots? Just delete the rest. If you only have 3 shots and they’re all blurry, there’s nothing you can do once the moment has passed.

The winner will be the one with smiling faces, good lighting, and an uncluttered background.

2. Watch Your Lighting.

Who hasn’t seen photos that are so dark you can’t make things out? A little common sense helps you get a good result.

  • If a window is behind the person you’re shooting (photography, folks, not guns!), then they’ll appear in silhouette. If that’s the effect you want, great. But if you want to see the facial expression, then be sure to put light in front of and preferably to the side of the subject.
  • Watch for shadows. If the lighting isn’t working, either add more light or switch to a different location.
  • Natural lighting makes it easiest. If you need to open the curtains to let the sunshine in, then do it.

3. Watch Your Angle

Pets: If you’ve ever seen pet pics that aren’t great, often it’s because the human towers above the pet and takes the photo from that angle.

  • The best pet pictures for taken at the PET’S eye level rather than from the human’s. Squat or sit down to get at or near the animal’s point of view before taking the photo.
  • Remember to use red eye reduction to avoid what I call the “demon eye” effect. Your dog probably isn’t possessed, even if s/he acts that way sometimes.
  • See Tips #1 and be patient. It’s not easy getting a great bright-eyed, perky-eared pet photo. It takes a lot of photos and…
  • Patience!

Humans: It’s just as important to be aware of your angle when photographing human people. Most people don’t like being photographed. I’m one of those, so please follow these tips so they won’t be disappointed more than usual.

  • Never take a photo of someone eating. You’ll just irritate people. NOBODY likes that and nobody looks good hewing. Who wants chewing immortalized until the end of time?
  • Never photograph upward so that you’re looking up the subject’s nose. That’s never flattering.
  • Don’t take a nos-to-nose photo. Have the subject at a 45 degree angle. This helps people look slimmer and feel better.
  • Frame the shot and then raise the camera a little above your head and angle it down toward the subject. This is the most flattering angle for anyone.
  • Use red-eye reduction so it doesn’t look as if your subject went on a bender or took a redeye flight.
  • Instruct your subject to think of something that brings them joy to get a true, bright smile and happy eyes.
  • Shoot from the angle that is most flattering or that brings out the essence of the plant, animal, person or whatever.
  • For good crowd shots, get up above the crowd. Stand on a chair or shoot from the balcony. This gives the view of the group, not just the people in front.

Carver Chet Mainard of Missouri

4. Pay Attention to Background and Foreground

How often have you seen or taken) photos where there is all sorts of clutter in the background. It may not be bad housekeeping, but often the image includes stuff that doesn’t belong there. It’s like someone telling a story and including a bunch of trivia and extraneous material that doesn’t help move the story.

I’ve seen photos where someone has a bunch of beer bottles or wine glasses in front of them. Chances are, it was a small table, but nobody wants to look like a lush! Likewise, nobody wants the platter of ribs or the dessert tray right in front of them in that image frozen forever in time.n

When taking photos of my mom’s roses, right behind them is a fence with a raised plant bed behind it. Getting that fence in te background ruins the beauty.

Rose 2015

Here’s what you can do to get the right background.

  • The subject of the photo is the star of the show. Make THAT look good and eliminate or minimize the rest.
  • Zoom in on the subject. Any digital camera or phone allows this. Your phone r tablet lets you use the “pinch and zoom” feature to adjust the zoom. Give it a moment to focus once you have the desired zoom level.
  • Move anything that’s in the way out of the way whenever possible. I can’t move the fence, but if you’re inside, you can move plates, glasses, toys, etc. out of the view.
  • Put the focal point just off from center, not dead center.

5. Ninja insider Tip; It’s about Breath!

This is a tip I figured out myself. I’ve never seen it mentioned, though I’m sure someone else does somewhere. Do this one thing and you’ll get rid of ost if not all your blurry photo issues.

Breathe normally while setting up the shot, but just before you click the shutter, hold your breath.

Holding the breath improves aim for shooting, whether you have a gun like my grandfather, who shot skeet, or a camera. It’s breathing that causes most of the blurry shots in the world.

I hope these tips help you take better pictures.

Fiction Writing help: How Do I Write Great Dialogue?

(NOTE: Post updated to add new material to aid with dialogue writing).

I love writing dialogue! The characters speak and I take dictation. At least, that’s how it feels to me. Here is a snippet of dialogue from my work in progress, They All Died Smiling. Kassidy, a writer/demon hunter, talks with her friend Floyd:

While finishing an assignment for the paper, I dialed my phone. “Floyd, I’m borrowing your studio for a half hour this afternoon, OK? Thanks. I appreciate it.”

“Uh…you’re welcome. Thanks for asking ahead of time.” I heard the smile in his voice and imagined him brushing a stray lock of blond hair out of those eyes that look like the sea.

“My pleasure. You won’t be in the throes of artistic fervor this afternoon. You will be at the gallery for your viewing.”

“You truly are a mess, Kass. It’s a showing, not a viewing. A viewing is what they do for dead bodies.”

Floyd was a good verbal sparring partner; I let him tease me in honor of our first meeting. I made that faux pas for real when interviewing him for a story about green pottery. Having come right from a wake to the gallery, I accidentally used the wrong word.

“Floyd, just the reception room, not the part full of your cherished creations. And I promise to make it up to you.”

“Ooh, that should be fun. I’ll hold you to it. You owe me big time for using my space.”

“Yes, I do.” My face flushed. “Sell lots of pots.”

“It’s a good thing you put an s on that.”

So many authors I know struggle with dialogue. Maybe I as a blind person have a distinct advantage over you sighted people, because I pay so mush attention to what I hear.

What’s at the Root of Dialogue Problems?

My observations tell me that problems with dialogue come from 2 main issues with writing dialogue:

[[[1]]]

  1. Not knowing your character well enough to hear them speak inside our head and translate that to the page, and
  2. Being so focused on grammar and punctuation that you don’t put the cadence of the character’s voice onto the page.
Character
Making Jewelry

Issue #1: Knowing Your Character

The most important things to know about a character are her hopes, fears, motivations and hot buttons. He will react to everything and everyone in the story based on those elements.

If he is terrified of dogs, he’ll react to a person he might like to date differently once he discovers his intended has 2 large dobermans. If she has been abused, someone raising a hand might cause her to flinch.

I don’t believe you need to reate a super complicated summary and life history for each inhabitant of your tales, but you want to know each of the main people like a friend.

How to Know your Characters Better

  1. Answer those basic questions for the principles: hopes, fears, goals/motivations and hot buttons.
  2. Get to know your character as a person. Don’t force him to be someone he’s not. Let him come alive.
  3. One of my favorite techniques comes from author jan Morrill, author of The Red kimono. She suggests you interview your character in a place where they will feel comfortable. You can ask them anything. It is a great way to tap into insights you may not have otherwise discovered.

Now it’s time to develop your ear for how people really speak.

Issue #2: Cadence and Dialect

While you may otherwise be a dedicated grammarian, you need to keep in mind that your characters need to be free to express their truth in the way they would say it.

Your Characters Won’t (Usually) Have Perfect Grammar

In case you hadn’t noticed, people don’t speak in a grammatically correct way most of the time. We use shortcuts. Start sentences without a subject sometimes.. Say incomplete sentences. Put words in the wrong order. (I’m driving the grammar Nazis NUTS right now!)

And it’s bigger than how they speak…

Your characters think inside their heads the way they speak.

in other words, if your point of view character is a country boy, he won’t think, I wonder why has he not stoped doing that. He’ll think, Why ain’t he quit?

Is dialect nothing more than stereotype?

I received a critique on a story that I was “tapping into too many stereotypes.” Naturally, the person who leveled this charge at me is a grammar Nazi. You just can’t give every character impeccable grammar and punctuation.

stereotypes are what they are because there’s a good dose of truth in them. Jeff Foxworthy’s Redneck jokes work because, well, that’s how rednecks are.

Become a Keen Listener

Make your character’s dialogue and internalization sound like the character. The reader should hear their voice in her head. So the first order of business is to know your character so well that YOU hear her inside your own head. Then turn what you hear in your head into speech and inner thoughts on the page.

Next, make sure your character sounds right for the time and place from which she comes. If your character is from New York, she or he should talk and think like a New Yorker. If you’re from Iowa and have no idea how those from the Big Apple talk, then you might consider following the tips below. If he’s a 14th Century noble, he will not use contractions or modern phrases like “hey bro,” or, “what’s shakin’, dude?”

How to Develop Your Ear for Dialogue

  1. Listen to music relevant to what you’re writing. It will convey the feeling for the correct way of thinking.
  2. Watch TV shows and/or movies set in the correct time and place. This will help you hear the difference between the way a city slicker and a country boy speak.
  3. If your character comes from another country, take in media from that country. If your character is East Indian, watch some Bollywood films to get the cadence right. If she’s English, watch some shows on BBC America.
  4. Don’t be afraid to write what you hear. Your character’s voice will stand out as long as you let it.

Have fun with dialogue, and if you would like a weekly author success tip about writing, publishing, book marketing and everything else authorly…please claim your free gifts and tips at WriteOnPurpose.com/free or complete the form below.

Each week, I review a well-written book, highlighting what makes it good from the reader’s perspective and what writing skills and techniques make it an irresistible read. Thus, each review serves both writers and readers.

This week’s excellent read is Staci Troilo Amazon Author Page

Strong Theme

It’s in the blood. Blood is thicker than water, as the old sayin goes, and this tale is all about the power of blood.

A family secret of infidelity and misdirection comes to light because of blood.

A young woman dies because of this secret. And that’s just in chapter one!

Secrets, Lies, Adultery, and Other Deadly Sins

Type and Cross by Staci TroiloType and Cross tells the story of a family who seem by all appearances to be the kind of family many people wish they had. Dad is a highly successful doctor. Mom does high level charity work. The kids go to private school. They have a housekeeper who keeps their lavish home spic and span, cooks their meals, and makes a fantastic cup of java.

But that’s just on the surface. That’s what the outside world sees. THe truth is dark and sordid.

Read my 5 star review on Amazon

Character Development through an Onion Plot

I don’t read much mainstream. Mostly I find it boring. Not so with Type and Cross. I adore suspense, and this book has it in spades. Staci Troilo created a plot with more layers than an onion.

Just when one plot twist comes to disrupt life for the doctor and his family, another is beginning to peal back its layer to reveal a stinging truth.

Family dynamics play a big role in this book. And in an era where people so easily throw away anything that doesn’t work, some characters in this novel try to mend fences.

Miracle Mindshift! Success Stories

Kevin Wilke "During the time I was using the Miracle Mindshift, out of nowhere significantly increased the money into my business while at the same significantly decreased the time I was working in my business.

So now, this is something that came out of nowhere because of this program.

And now... a new branding opportunity has opened and is going to be a great new income opportunity and a bigger business!"

- Kevin Wilke

Hear Kevin's LIVE Success Story:

Lynn Benjamin"Something so beautiful happens each day as I listen to the daily Miracle Mindshift. The best way I can describe the experience is simultaneously getting juiced up a vibrational level, or more, while getting settled right into, grounded into the center of my being.

Today, while listening to day 15, SEVERAL lights in the mansion turned on. A rapid download of aha's begin to make my heart feel different. I'm integrating now, and can say that I will now experience the four directions on a physical level, rather than having the four directions as just concepts. How part of the earth we are. I look forward to a deepening of this physical connection with the four directions.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom, I'm so grateful!"

- Lynn Benjamin

StacyQuinn"I went through the day 11 content, and I was hearing the same critical chatter in my mind. I realized how these rules, this previous programming was resisting my affirmations.

When I did my verbal affirmations, the chatter in my head was actually "talking" over my verbal affirmations. I was inches away from a mirror, looking directly in my own eyes, saying my affirmations and the voice in my head said:
"How could a gift to the world be so ugly?"

I was surprised by my own reaction. I started laughing. I mean belly laughing. I'm still laughing as I write this.

I don't know who that dude was but he's very rude and he's not my friend. I now know what he sounds like and how he talks.

I wanted to send this email to thank you. Because I'm not listening to that jerk anymore."

- Stacy Quinn

Monica_Leccese"I completed my first "Mindshift" after having battled the cacophony of voices and Master Trickster that seem to come along with changing thought patterns. I devoted a portion of each day to the practice, although not the same time each day: to the imaging, writing, and speaking of my declarations and affirmations. I recorded each "Gift" that I received and was sure to be grateful for each one, every day. By the end of the month my declarations were manifesting although not in an "overwhelming" manner. Still...at the end...I was so very grateful. I decided to commence another "shift" ...   I would create a circle, image my declarations, state them...but on a lesser scale than a full practice. After that decision I started to create a circle where I would light a flame to each direction. .......and that's when it happened......I shifted. I can only describe the feeling as the most amazing I have ever experienced: time, the world, my perspective...stopped; the energy rushing through me was so empowering it was nearly overwhelming. I had never before felt so alive, so en pointe in the moment, so...on...purpose. I had rubbed the magic lantern and the genie has held my hand ever since. I have been getting EVERYTHING I have been asking for, to the EXACT degree I have asked. Remember...you get what you ask for."
