Pinterest for Authors: How Can Pinterest Help Authors Sell More Books?

A friend of mine who is an author recently said, “I hear I oughta get on Pinterest.”

That sounds like getting on a horse or something. Funny.

The reason to engage in a particular social network is only in small part “being there.”

Yes, it’s good to have a presence in the various networks, because that way if it’s someone’s favorite place to hang, they’ll find you.

But any of the networks is, first and foremost, a social network. You want it as a part of your book marketing plan, but you don’t want to run around puking out your book link all over the place like an overzealous partier after a bender.

Pinterest Image Optimization: Make the Best Pins!

That’s a terrific graphic, but there’s a lot to unpack if you’re not deep into all this techie stuff. Here’s the short course.

  1. Join Pinterest.
  2. Create boards (like photo albums) about stuff you like and about your books. Mine include inspirational quotes, space, animals, nature, recipes to make, and of course things relevant to writing, book marketing, and similar topics related to how I help YOU.
  3. Have FUN with it.
  4. Be social.
  5. Like, comment and share other people’s good stuff.
  6. Build relationships with interesting people in your genre or niche.

Those last tips are most important. Be social. play nicely, and build relationships.

How Can Amazon Best Sellers Help Any Author Sell More Books?

It’s often not until after a book is published that an author starts thinking about how to sell more books. Today on the Awakened Author Premium Call, I helped members look at some things on Amazon to help us all understand what’s hot.

I think of market research as a treasure hunt. It’s a game that helps me reach more people. Look for the Awakened Author hashtag #AwakenedAuthor for more help and tips for authors.

The best time to start thinking about book marketing is NOW, wherever you are in your process, and the earlier the better!

Where’s the best place to go – Google or Amazon?

Google has its place, but remember this. Google is a SEARCH engine. Amazon is a BUYING engine.

You may start with Google to get an overall idea, but jump quickly to where people put their money where their mouth is – Amazon.

People go to Google to look up stuff. They go to Amazon with an intention to buy. That’s why you want to use Amazon for the bulk of your market research.

It’s important to know what’s selling.

Even if you think you’re allergic to marketing, the truth is you touch more people when you sell more books. Makes sense, right? So get over yourself and relax into the fun of sharing your message with more of the world.

Here’s how to see what sells so you can model success.

  1. Go to Amazon.com
  2. Search Books (in Amazon’s search box)
  3. Click Best Sellers
  4. Look at the overall best sellers. Click on them. Take notes on anything that stands out in the description, cover, author page, etc.
  5. Now, click on your genre and see bestsellers in that category under books. Take notes.

Model the success of others to cut your own learning curve..

  • Seeing what works is the easiest shortcut to help you.
  • Notice the way the successful book descriptions are written. Follow the pattern.
  • Look at author pages and adopt ideas.
  • Get title ideas by seeing what titles work well in your niche/genre.
  • Get inspiration for your cover by following the leaders.

Does Using Social Media Really Help Sell More Books?

People tend to either hate social media or love it. One big complaint many authors have is they want to sell more books with the help of social media sites, but they end up spending hours liking cat pictures, playing games, and otherwise wasting time.

Honestly any tool can help or hurt, depending on whether you use it well. But you may wonder if authors REALLY sell more books thanks to social media.

Five Reasons Social Media Will Always Sell More Books…by Peter McCarthy

…If one uses it wisely.

Recently there has been a spate of research and opinion on social media and its effect – or lack thereof – on commerce. Attribution studies abound; critics of such “last-click conversion” studies point to “dark social” and the nuances of driving sales. I’ve been watching all of this with as open a mind as I’ve been able to muster and have come to the following conclusions:

Nearly everything I’ve seen is incomplete, misinformed, or reflects an inability on the part of people and organizations to actually use social as opposed to just doing social; and that social media will always work for marketing and selling books (and ebooks).

Here are the top five reasons why:

  1. The Core Book-Buying Audience Uses Social Media (and so do all those other folks who will buy books if they hear about them…)
    This is true unless your audience falls outside of the 85% of the U.S. population that uses social media or isn’t between the ages of 18 and 65+. Check the most recent Pew stats. Perhaps even bump them against some book industry studies. The audience is there. Fish where the fish are.
  2. Real Consumer Data
    The audience data that marketers, publicists, and salespeople can gather about social media followers, fans, and general users should be invaluable to anyone marketing or selling books. Acting on an understanding of the demographics, psychographics, and behavior of an audience with regard to an author, a title, or a site will grow sales and marketing efficiency. If it doesn’t, then something else is very wrong. Gathering and acting on data certainly helped Obama whip Romney. And it can even be predictive (Holy Grail!); in 2010 a couple smart HP researchers predicted opening box office using Twitter volume and sentiment along with number of screens. They did so with 97% accuracy.
  3. Identifying Adjacent Audiences
    Once you’ve analyzed your core audience, it quite straightforward to identify key attributes of that audience and find “look-alikes.” In other words, folks with similar key attributes (hobbies, beliefs, activities, likes, dislikes, locales, marital status, education level, etc.) and place your book in front of those folks who, it happens, will behave much like your core. This is the social graph and it is major.
  4. SEO
    This could be an essay. Short, over-simplified version focusing on two key points: 1) Both the “general” engines such as Google and the more-specific engines (eg. Amazon) use social “signals” to assist them in determining the authority of everything – including authors and books. Authority=rank. So, positioning. If the title holds up (eg. garners clicks and/or more links over time), it will retain that rank or rise… and 2) As a corollary; an author or title’s presence on the major networks will nearly always enter the first page of a Google search for the author, title, and even some of the longer tail terms. Ranking higher in search sells books; ask Google or Amazon.
  5. Making the Next Campaign Easier
    We hear a lot of talk about scaling marketing efforts. Social is often seen as a hurdle to scale. Social is actually scalable using technology. But it doesn’t really matter if the “IT” hurdle is too great; scale is inherent in using social to market. A marketer’s ability to look at the performance indicators and underlying consumer data of past social campaigns will increase her understanding of what works, for what, and how well. Also, what doesn’t work. This will speed and hone her next efforts. Every time. Knowledge, process, and a better “feel for the game” is scale. Lather, rinse, learn, repeat. Scaled marketing sells more books.

Bottom line: As publishers realize – or perhaps more accurately stated – embrace the fact that they must demonstrate to authors and retail partners that they are the best at connecting books with readers and driving demand, the question becomes how to do so. It is difficult for me to think of any other efforts publishers can employ that will yield the insights and long-lasting audience development of social media. Very difficult.

Book Marketing Coach: 7 Fun Ways to Sell More Books

As an author mentor (my hashtag #AuthorMentor on the networks), I also serve as a book marketing coach, because what author doesn’t want to sell more books?

Recently, I did a training about how to take the pain out of book marketing, which you’ll find at www.ProfitableStorytelling.com/painreplay, and a participant asked,

“How can I make book marketing fun?”

SO many authors say they hate book marketing or they just want to write not market, or they’re too busy for book marketing. It doesn’t have to be that way!

Here are 7 tips for how to make book marketing fun and sell more books.

  1. Expect Miracles! All right, I’ve often quoted the character Han Solo from Star Wars, “never tell me the odds” and had miraculous happenings because of it. So many people who have had amazing successes say nobody told them they couldn’t do the amazing, nearly impossible thing, so they just did it! They had a miracle mindshift and made magic.
  2. Sell more books by DECIDING it’s fun, whatever “fun” means to you. It’s all about your mindset. Create a fun event at a local shop or restaurant, make a game, run a contest, piggyback on another event –  whatever keeps it playful and interesting.
  3. Be true to your life purpose:  I really love this quote from the Success article: “Be honest with what drives you. Find out what your “why” is and make a mantra of it.”
  4. Set specific goals and affirm their reality: “Sell more books” is so vague. Just selling 1 means you’ve sold more than you had before. “I am so grateful because I sell at least 100 books a day” is a powerful affirmation that sets things in motion.
  5. Be grateful for book sales (or anything else) even BEFORE it shows up in your reality.  One day I woke up and began my gratitude litany, and I had an “aha moment.” I had forgotten to be grateful for the sales I have today at the beginning of the day. Now I begin my day by expressing gratitude for the sales, website traffic and other goals “before” they show up. What a difference that has made for any goal I set.
  6. Make declarations of your reality: Simply decide your truth, declare it and make note of every sign, small or huge, that it is coming to be.
  7. Don’t buy into “hard” (the story it has to be a long hard journey):. Whatever your intention, you truly can shift into that reality by first shifting your mindset. FEEL yourself as already experiencing all you desire to have as if it is currently true. Then watch as life and your reticular activating system in your brain show you example after example of how it is coming to be.

StacyQuinn"I went through the day 11 content, and I was hearing the same critical chatter in my mind. I realized how these rules, this previous programming was resisting my affirmations.

When I did my verbal affirmations, the chatter in my head was actually "talking" over my verbal affirmations. I was inches away from a mirror, looking directly in my own eyes, saying my affirmations and the voice in my head said:
"How could a gift to the world be so ugly?"

Monica_Leccese"I completed my first "Mindshift" after having battled the cacophony of voices and Master Trickster that seem to come along with changing thought patterns. I devoted a portion of each day to the practice, although not the same time each day: to the imaging, writing, and speaking of my declarations and affirmations. I recorded each "Gift" that I received and was sure to be grateful for each one, every day. By the end of the month my declarations were manifesting although not in an "overwhelming" manner. Still...at the end...I was so very grateful. I decided to commence another "shift" ...   I would create a circle, image my declarations, state them...but on a lesser scale than a full practice. After that decision I started to create a circle where I would light a flame to each direction. .......and that's when it happened......I shifted. I can only describe the feeling as the most amazing I have ever experienced: time, the world, my perspective...stopped; the energy rushing through me was so empowering it was nearly overwhelming. I had never before felt so alive, so en pointe in the moment, so...on...purpose. I had rubbed the magic lantern and the genie has held my hand ever since. I have been getting EVERYTHING I have been asking for, to the EXACT degree I have asked. Remember...you get what you ask for."
