How Can Storytelling Techniques Build a Strong Brand?

How Can Storytelling Techniques Build a Strong Brand?

while doing some work for a consulting client, I found this excellent article about storytelling and branding. It seems that storytelling techniques and a discussion of storytelling for business branding were high on the list, and it is no wonder!

It seems everyone is getting more and more into storytelling.

Target stores are adding boutique lines to their offerings, and their tV commercials feature stories of little companies making it big at Target. KMart features their clothing designers’ stories to build interest and loyalty to the brand. (OK I really LOVE buying clothes at KMart. I can always find clothes that I like and that are sized for REAL size people!)

When one company brings in a line from another company, they are licensing or “borrowing” the brand.

This article from Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association gives insight into just how big storytelling for business has become. This is a professional association, and if THEY are talking about storytelling techniques and storytelling ideas, then YOU as a business owner need to pay more attention to the power of storytelling.

After the article, I’ll share storytelling techniques you can use to get you started.

Storytelling at forefront of LIMA Conference

Posted by Marty Brochstein

One of the most striking themes running through this month’s LIMA Retail & Branding Conference was the importance of storytelling in building a strong brand. Whether it’s the positioning of Iconix’ Material Girl fast fashion juniors brand at Macy’s around Madonna’s 14-year-old daughter Lola, or the attempted reinvention of Kmart’s apparel and home business as KmartDesign, or the development of businesses around such celebrities as Twiggy, Queen Latifah and Mary J. Blige on HSN, an authentic story gives the brand substance.

HSN’s Executive VP Bill Brand, for example, told of the company being approached by ‘60s modeling icon Twiggy about mounting a fashion business. It began with a meeting at HSN’s Florida headquarters. “For us, it’s really important that we have that face-to-face meeting, that we really spend some key quality time together, and really understand, is this about making money, is this about media placements, what is this about? How authentic is this?”

A subsequent meeting, he said, involved HSN’s design director rooting through Twiggy’s closet in London, “going through her favorite things and what inspires her, and from that, 6-9 months later,” the Twiggy London brand was launched on HSN, where it stands as one of the company’s top apparel brands in under two years.

For Jeff Fagel, Director of Brand Development at Sears Holdings, the ongoing challenge is help Kmart gain credibility (and sales) in the apparel and home categories. The marketing challenge involves a three part process, he said: “How do you get people to pay attention [to the message]? How do you get people to care? How do you get people to act?” The goal is to spark “curious disbelief,” or put another way, to spark the following consumer reaction: “No way, this can’t be Kmart.”

Acknowledging the perception of Kmart’s apparel as being of “low quality and style,” the brand development team set out to “build consideration and credibility for the brand… in a disruptive and differentiate way.” A key element has been the work done with a team of documentary filmmakers who followed Kmart ‘s design team in their New York and Chicago offices, and on trend-shopping trips to London and Paris. The footage was rapidly cut into four pilot videos, and show to consumer panels.

“This wasn’t about [simply] creating viral video; this wasn’t about going out and shocking. It was really about being true to the foundation of Kmart, being honest and authentic and speaking in a different voice, and really trying to bring in a new apparel and home customer,” Fagel told the conference attendees. “We had a great story to tell…. Part of it is product – improved product, quality, better design, expanded assortments, new brands, great value for the price, but everyone can say that. We have a 250-person design team in Soho and Chicago, which nobody knew about, and we felt it was an opportunity to tell our story in a unique way and cut through the clutter.”

Over the past two years, the company has been attempting to build buy-in for the KmartDesign effort via social media, with dedicated Facebook page, YouTube portal, Twitter feed, etc. Lots of content has been created. Fagel says that it’s “about building digital relationships and building relationships, not about getting 25,000 Facebook fans. It’s about how do you connect with people on a daily basis, and looking at whether the conversation has shifted.”

Initial results are promising, but it’s an ongoing effort that needs to be sustained in many ways. “It took Target 10+ years to get to where they are right now, and for those who are in retail and know a lot about retail, it starts with product and instore. Those are the two key components. [It has to happen] over time. It’s not going to be overnight.”

That’s great for Target or KMart, but what about you as an expert, author, entrepreneur or business owner?

The answer is you do the same thing! Here’s how:

3 Powerful Storytelling Techniques to Build a Strong Brand

1. Tell the story of how you got started.

The Knot, a hugely popular wedding site, came to be because the founder had every disaster known to woman happen at her wedding, and she didn’t want other brides to go through what she did.

That is a powerful story that attracts the attention of her ideal customer. It conveys caring and instantly builds trust.

What story can YOU tell that will engender a feeling of know, like and trust in your ideal customer?

2. Be human.

OK unless some Visitors from other star systems are reading my site for some reason, I can safely say that you are human. Is that human touch in your company? Do people feel they can connect? In other words, tell the HUMAN story not the product story.

Add the human element to your communications, whether in email, online, in space ads or anywhere else. Think of all the Facebook pages for even the biggest brands and you become aware of the importance of the human touch.

3. Tell the STORY about solving a big customer problem.

Share how someone’s life changes with your solution. Don’t just say, “WE solve this problem all the time.”  Tell the story of how Jo suffered with a problem, then searched endlessly for a solution, then found you and then reaped an amazing result.

Storytelling Techniques: How Can Visual Storytelling Enrich Your Life?

Storytelling techniques: How Can Visual Storytelling Enrich Your Life?

When you want to commemorate the important moments of life, how do you do it?

Do you take pictures? Shoot videos? Scrapbook? Create sculptures? Own a charm bracelet?

No matter what medium you choose, the images and the meaning behind them together tell the story.

Vision Board

One example of visual storytelling is creating a vision board. This is a collection of pictures, symbols, drawings or other images that represent the life you are creating. If you saw the Secret Movie, you may recall John Asaraf’s example of how he put the house he desired onto a vision board and when he took it out of a box years later, he realized he had indeed claimed the home of his desire.

Here is a vision board I created for myself that uses 8 pictures:

6415838277 70ba64d2f9 Storytelling Techniques: How Can Visual Storytelling Enrich Your Life?

Here is what the various photographs mean:

This vision board is called, ”My Life of BLiss.”

This is an example of visual storytelling, because each photo represents part of the story I am creating in my life.

Here is what each photo means, left to right: I touch every life on the planet in a positive way. I ride in a hot air balloon and soar high above the ground. I swim with wild dolphins, take a cruise to Alaska and 1 in the Greek Isles, meet giant tortoises in the Galapagos Islands, visit sacred sites in Hawaii, appear on the cover of Success Magazine, and have many other amazing adventures, all in a sacred manor, in harmony with all of life. This is why visual storytelling represents one of many storytelling techniques

Pandora Charm Bracelet

Another visual storytelling example is a charm bracelet. The Pandora Bracelets are getting a lot of atention from stars in Hollywood. Pandora just sponsored a holiday-themed skating special. The various charms all help the wearer tell a story.

Imagine wearing symbols of your cherished memories in the form of jewelry. That way, you have the reminders with you, and you get to tell the stories of what those symbols mean to you and how they relate to your life.

For example,  Pandora charm bracelets empower you to select charms taht represent whatever is important to you.

In the video selection, an elderly woman shares the meanings of the football, rose, butterfly, and other charms on her Pandora bracelets.  Watch even the first minute of this video and see how the charms reveal her story:

Visual storytelling has many expressions.

  • art
  • jewelry
  • photos
  • videos
  • photo books
  • scrapbooks
  • collages

just to name a few.

What are good stoytelling techniques for visual storytelling?

1. Choose a theme. The theme may be a montage of your life or it may be more specific, such as “my kids” or “the power of love in my life.” The theme stands as your intention.

2. Decide on what elements convey the theme. If you’re taking photographs, consider the most powerful images to convey your intention.

3. Create a feeling of movement or “something happening.” Even though photographs are “frozen” moments in time, each can still convey a sense of action or movement. Movement will capture your imagination and the attention of the story receiver no matter what medium.

4. Share the story in whatever way feels right to you. Let it be a conversation  starter and an opportunity to open yourself.

5. Recognize that learning storytelling techniques and developing your skill – whether in visual storytelling or some other form of storytelling – is a journey. It’s mostly about opening yourself to be aware of the stories all around you.

Miracle Monday Inspirational Stories: Anthony Robles 2011 NCAA Wrestling Champion Even with No Right Leg

Miracle Monday Inspirational Stories: Anthony Robles 2011 NCAA Wrestling Champion

“My mom used to tell me that God made me this way for a reason, and I believe that reason is wrestling.”

 –  Anthony Robles inspirational quotes, miracle prayer quotes from the, 2011 NCAA Wrestling Champion, 125 pound weight class who achieved his success with only one leg

When you see someone without a body part, how do you feel?

Do you believe the person is missing out, lacking or less than others?

Miracle Monday inspirational stories, inspirational quotes

Imagine watching a young man with well-muscled arms crossing the college campus on crutches. He has no right leg, and you see him go into the auditorium, then into the wrestling arena as a competitor.

Then, astounded, you watch him face and conquer wrestlers with all their requisite body parts to become the national champion..

His story is one of the most inspirational stories you will encounter, because

yes, the top college wrestler in the 125 pound weight class is missing something that most people take for granted.

Anthony Robles was born without a right leg.

Here is NCAA 2011 Wrestling Champion Anthony Robles’ belief about having only one leg:

I really don’t see missing my leg as a handicap. You know, my parents raised me strong and they didn’t give me any special treatment. So, I believe I can do anything I set my mind to and wrestling is something I enjoy, I love it and I’m just trying to be (the) best at it” – Anthony Robles, WPVI March 16th 2011. inspirational quotes

His inspirational stories of doing what some might believe to be impossible touch people worldwide.

Here is a brief interview Anthony Robles gave after his incredible win.

[youtube id=”Kpfq7J2VRlc”]

watch the video.

Inside information about the sport of wrestling.

Here is a snippet from an article from the Tuscon Citizen newspaper via USA Today Online about inclusiveness in the sport of wrestling:

Wrestling is a sport that prides itself on being open to athletes of all types:

• Dock Kelly, born without part of his right hand and his right leg, competed in the 1996 NCAA Division I championships for North Carolina-Greensboro.

• Nick Ackerman, who lost both legs below the knees as a child due to bacterial meningitis, was 174-pound champion at the 2001 Division III finals. He wrestled for Simpson (Iowa).

•Kyle Maynard, born without hands or feet, qualified for the Georgia high school championships in 2004.

“We give opportunities,” said (Oklahoma State coach John) Smith. “Wrestling is a sport of opportunity for the little, for the big, for the average kid, for the kid that’s got one leg, one arm. It’s a sport of opportunity for a lot of people that can’t do a lot of things or other sports.”

Robles never sits on the pity pot. His miracle mindset, strength, and determination are taking him from champion wrestler to inspirational speaker for sure.

Turning “Weakness” into Strength

Since he has only one leg to stand on, Robles.had to adapt his technique. Upper body strength and cat-like agility serve him well on the mat. His tremendous attitude serves him in all areas of life.

You as a person on a quest for your dream come true also have amazing strengths and abilities too, and they’re all tucked inside of life’s challenges. No matter who you are, you have an unique way of doing things that you must honor.

The road to all your dreams come true is definitely a broken road, and it is because of the stumbles, challenges and even heartbreak that you reach the object of your own personal quest.

Following the crowd does not serve you well. You turn any supposed weakness or deficit into a strength when you find the power in your pain.

Hidden inside every step along your own road of trials is a gift in the form of an opportunity to develop strengths of character you would not have had on an easier road.

But perhaps you are feeling grumbly about your challenges and difficulty. perhaps you consider them to be stumbling blocks. Or perhaps you wonder why you are faced with such a horrible fate.

Find the Power in Your Pain and the Message in Your Mess

How can you find power in your pain and unwrap the gift inside your trials and tribulations?

1. Write down your feelings. No need to censor or criticize your emotions. Just be honest and write them down. There is a powerful purpose to this. When you write on purpose, you get to the root of what’s bothering you instead of staying stuck in a feeling.

2. Have a mentor. A mentor is someone who is ahead of you along the journey. All successful people throughout history have had mentors who guided them and gave them perspective.

3. Be around only positive people. Anyone who gossips, complains or criticizes is negative and has no room in your world. You become like who and what surround you.

4. Avoid watching the news. Media influences you in subtle ways. Reading or especially watching the news drains your momentum and positive energy, so avoid it. You’ll find out from someone anything you need to know.

5. Find the gift inside the challenge. Perhaps you have heard of the Rascal Flatts song “Bless the Broken Road” with the lyric, “God bless the broken road that lead me straight to you.” Look for the opportunities that have come to you as a result of your difficulties and challenges. You may start to realize that something amazing wouldn’t have come to you without that particular challenge.

6. Share your story of turning trials into triumph. Tell the story of overcoming your challenges whenever you get the chance. Anthony Robles intends to be an inspirational speaker, and no doubt he will inspire millions with his message. You may not want to be a speaker, but those around you will definitely be inspired by YOUR strength and courage.

Find the Message in Your Mess

Miracle Mindshift! Success Stories

Kevin Wilke "During the time I was using the Miracle Mindshift, out of nowhere significantly increased the money into my business while at the same significantly decreased the time I was working in my business.

So now, this is something that came out of nowhere because of this program.

And now... a new branding opportunity has opened and is going to be a great new income opportunity and a bigger business!"

- Kevin Wilke

Hear Kevin's LIVE Success Story:

Lynn Benjamin"Something so beautiful happens each day as I listen to the daily Miracle Mindshift. The best way I can describe the experience is simultaneously getting juiced up a vibrational level, or more, while getting settled right into, grounded into the center of my being.

Today, while listening to day 15, SEVERAL lights in the mansion turned on. A rapid download of aha's begin to make my heart feel different. I'm integrating now, and can say that I will now experience the four directions on a physical level, rather than having the four directions as just concepts. How part of the earth we are. I look forward to a deepening of this physical connection with the four directions.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom, I'm so grateful!"

- Lynn Benjamin

StacyQuinn"I went through the day 11 content, and I was hearing the same critical chatter in my mind. I realized how these rules, this previous programming was resisting my affirmations.

When I did my verbal affirmations, the chatter in my head was actually "talking" over my verbal affirmations. I was inches away from a mirror, looking directly in my own eyes, saying my affirmations and the voice in my head said:
"How could a gift to the world be so ugly?"

I was surprised by my own reaction. I started laughing. I mean belly laughing. I'm still laughing as I write this.

I don't know who that dude was but he's very rude and he's not my friend. I now know what he sounds like and how he talks.

I wanted to send this email to thank you. Because I'm not listening to that jerk anymore."

- Stacy Quinn

Monica_Leccese"I completed my first "Mindshift" after having battled the cacophony of voices and Master Trickster that seem to come along with changing thought patterns. I devoted a portion of each day to the practice, although not the same time each day: to the imaging, writing, and speaking of my declarations and affirmations. I recorded each "Gift" that I received and was sure to be grateful for each one, every day. By the end of the month my declarations were manifesting although not in an "overwhelming" manner. Still...at the end...I was so very grateful. I decided to commence another "shift" ...   I would create a circle, image my declarations, state them...but on a lesser scale than a full practice. After that decision I started to create a circle where I would light a flame to each direction. .......and that's when it happened......I shifted. I can only describe the feeling as the most amazing I have ever experienced: time, the world, my perspective...stopped; the energy rushing through me was so empowering it was nearly overwhelming. I had never before felt so alive, so en pointe in the moment, so...on...purpose. I had rubbed the magic lantern and the genie has held my hand ever since. I have been getting EVERYTHING I have been asking for, to the EXACT degree I have asked. Remember...you get what you ask for."
