Either you are showing excited anticipation for the the holidays, or… you are showing signs of stress.
By the way, holiday stress is not just reserved for year end holidays.
Holidays keep coming all… year… long…
Holidays have an interesting way of setting off a wide range of emotions because there are “triggers” all around you that you may not even be aware of.
These triggers are set off with your senses through sight, sound, taste, touch and smell.
Triggers surface memories, some pleasurable, some you would rather forget.
Either way… there is an emotional response to the triggers.
Here are some examples of triggers:
- A song you hear on the radio that brings you back to a very specific moment in time.
- The taste of hot chocolate and marshmallows.
- The smell of a certain food that’s only cooked once a year on this holiday.
- The sight of the candy dish at Grandma’s house.
- The feeling of the first snowflake of the year hitting your tongue.
All these are triggers and you want to begin paying attention to how you react to them.
Hint: If you want to know how you feel about something listen to your body.
Hold a thought in your mind and see how your body reacts. Your body never lies.
I want you to practice and experience this right now.
Close your eyes… be still… and take a few. slow.. deep… breaths….
Now put the thought of the upcoming Holiday clearly in your mind.
Imagine that you are there right now… See the people… Make it real…
Now listen to your body… What’s it saying?
Are you showing signs of stress?
What is your body telling you right now?
- Did you experience tightness in your chest?
- A feeling in your stomach?
- A smile on your face?
- A feeling of joy?
- A feeling of anxiety?
It can be very subtle but you can learn to recognize it.
By the way, when you read the words “Homework Assignment” earlier. How did you react to that? What kind of thoughts immediately came to mind? Keep practicing your awareness.
